FULLERTON, Calif. - Senior first baseman Troy Scott went 5-for-8 with a pair of doubles over the doubleheader, but it wasn't enough as the Washington baseball team was swept by No. 13 Cal State Fullerton, 6-1 and 9-4, Saturday at Goodwin Field.
The doubleheader was arranged due to forecasts for rain on Sunday. The Titans (11-7) won all three games in the series vs. Washington (3-13).
In the opener, Husky starter Aaron West (0-3) suffered the loss despite allowing just two hits in his six innings. He did, however, give up four runs (three earned), walked four and struck out three. Fullerton starter Tyler Pill (2-0) earned the win, allowing one run on eight hits and no walks over seven and one-third innings.
Washington jumped out to an early lead in the first inning of game one. Center fielder Caleb Brown hit the third pitch of the game into the right-field corner for a double to lead off the game. After an out, he moved to third on an infield single from Jacob Lamb and scored on a single from Scott. A double play, however, ended the inning with the UW in front, 1-0.
Fullerton drew even in the third, scoring a run without benefit of a hit. An error, a walk and a hit batter loaded the bases with two outs. A wild pitch then allowed Ivory Thomas, who'd opened the inning by reaching on an error, to score. A walk re-loaded the bases, but West got off the hook with the score tied at 1-1 thanks to an inning-ending ground out.
In the fourth, Michael Lorenzen reached on an infield single, Fullerton's first hit of the game. He advanced to second on a flyout, stole third and then gave the Titans a 2-1 lead when he scored on a Thomas sacrifice fly.
CSF's Nick Ramirez led off the sixth with a home run, just the second hit of the game for the Titans. Fullerton also scored another run in the sixth without a hit, thank to two walks, a hit batter and a sacrifice fly, making it a 4-1 lead. In the eight, the Titans put the game away as Thomas' double scored two more, stretching the lead to 6-1.
In the second game, Ramirez singled to score the first run of the game in the first inning. In the top of the second, the Huskies drew even at 1-1 when Scott led off with a double and scored on a single from Chase Anselment.
Fullerton went back in front in the bottom of the second as Thomas was hit by a pitch and eventually scored on a groundout from Richy Pedroza. In the fourth, Titans catcher Jared Deacon singled to drive in Thomas to make it 3-2.
Washington scored again in the fifth when shortstop Ty Afenir was hit by a pitch and eventually scored on a groundout from Brown, but Fullerton stretched the lead back to two runs, at 4-2, on an RBI single from Deacon.
Scott got things started for Washington again in the sixth, leading off with a double. He eventually scored on a B.K. Santy groundout and then the Huskies knotted the score at 9-9 later in the inning as Anselment was hit by a pitch and eventually scored on a two-out error.
The Titans, however, took back the lead in the bottom of the sixth. After a pair of hits put runners at the corners, Ramirez singled home a run to put Fullerton back in front. Lorenzen followed with a two-run single, stretching the Titans lead to 7-4. In the seventh, Deacon tripled and scored on a fly ball and, in the eight, a run scored on a wild pitch, to make it 9-4.
Husky senior Jacob Clem (1-3) was charged with the loss in game two, allowing six runs on 10 hits over five innings of work. CSF starter Dylan Floro (2-2) picked up the victory. He allowed four runs (two earned) on six hits in his six innings.
The Huskies next travel to Stillwater, Okla., where they'll face Arkansas-Pine Bluff in a neutral-site game on Tuesday, followed by a game at Oklahoma State on Wednesday.
