SEATTLE - Even without their top singles player, the Husky men's tennis team was too deep and too sharp for the 72nd-ranked San Francisco Dons today and swept to a 7-0 win at the Nordstrom Tennis Center. Senior Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan had the day off but the rest of the 19th-ranked Huskies (9-4) all moved up a spot and delivered straight set wins in five of the six singles matches.
Stepping up to the No. 1 singles spot for just the second time in his career, and the first time at the Nordstrom, sophomore Kyle McMorrow showed no signs of discomfort, and earned the clinching point with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Mark DeCastro. That's already the 20th singles win of the year for the 2010 Pac-10 Freshman of the Year, against just four defeats.
Freshman Max Manthou (Tacoma, Wash.) got his second start of the year in singles, and came through with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Germain Bahri at sixth singles. Sophomore Marton Bots was the first Husky to wrap up his singles match, as he handled Jacob Hartwig 6-1, 6-1 at fifth singles. That's three wins in a row for the Budapest native.
Senior Tobi Obenaus (Waidhofen, Austria) was very sharp in a 6-0, 6-2 win over Richard Bucalem at No. 4 singles to make it 5-0. Senior Martin Kildahl then defeated fellow Oslo, Norway native Ola Bakke at the No. 2 singles spot. The two were childhood friends and played doubles together, but Kildahl put that aside for a 6-3, 6-1 win.
The last match was freshman Daniel Schmidt at the No. 3 spot. The Vienna, Austria native took the first set from William Schumacher, 6-3, but dropped the second set by the same score. With the match clinched, the two played a 10-point super-tiebreak to decide things, and Schmidt got the win, 10-7.
"I was happy to see a lot of young guys playing well, with Max and Daniel the two freshmen, and Kyle and Marton as sophomores. I had an eye on that," said head coach Matt Anger. "I'm happy with where we are right now and I think today we were trying to do the right things throughout and we will need to be even more ready next weekend than we were for this weekend."
Washington clinched the doubles point quickly with wins at the first two spots despite a rearranged lineup. 67th-ranked Obenaus and Kildahl moved up to the No. 1 doubles spot for the first time this year and scored an 8-2 win over Schumacher and Bahri. That came just seconds after McMorrow teamed with junior Matt Stith for the first time this year, and the two earned an 8-5 win over DeCastro and Bucalem. The No. 3 match then went to a tiebreak a couple games early at 6-6. Bots and Schmidt won the last six points of the tiebreak to defeat Bakke and Hartwig 7-6 (7-2).
The Huskies will have a tough match on their hands next Saturday, when 27th-ranked Minnesota comes to the Nordstrom for a 2 p.m. dual.
