SEATTLE - Junior captain Kate Deines (Issaquah, Wash.) led the Huskies (3-1) to a huge victory in their 2010 home opener by scoring three of the teams four goals in the 4-0 win over Syracuse (1-2-2) Friday night at Husky Soccer Stadium.
"We needed a big bounce back from last weekend's game and I thought we did that," said head coach Lesle Gallimore. "We came out and controlled the tempo against a high-pressing team. We finished our chances and anytime you can give yourself a 2-0 lead and hang you have a good chance to win."
Deines became just the 17th Husky in school history to score three or more goals in a single game and the first since Melissa Bennett scored three goals vs. USC on Nov. 10, 2002.
"Coming off a tough loss everyone was ready to get a win at home," said Deines. "We came together and we got it done. It's rare to get two penalty kicks in one game. I just tried to calm myself down. My teammates did the hard part and I just put them in the back of the net."
The first goal for UW and Deines came in the 18th minute on a penalty kick. Senior McKenna Waitley (Coronado, Calif.) drew the foul in the box. It was the first goal of the season for Deines.
Off of a corner kick by freshman Lindsay Elston (Sammamish, Wash.), Deines scored her second goal of the game in the 19th minute. Senior Kellye Joswick (Placentia, Calif.) was there for the double assist.
The Huskies kept the pressure on in the second half by scoring two more goals, the first in the 49th minute on the second penalty kick of the game for Deines.
"Goals are a weird thing and Kate had two great penalty kicks and was in the right place at the right time," Gallimore said. "Both her and Kendyl (Pele) played great tonight and when your two captains play that way everyone else will follow and it was a great team effort tonight."
The final goal came from freshman Annie Sittauer (Everett, Wash.). It was the first goal of her young Husky career in the 56th minute and was assisted by junior Kelli Stewart (Mukilteo, Wash.) off of the corner kick.
Husky goalkeeper Kari Davidson picked up her second win of the season, making one save. It was her ninth career shutout and 21st victory.
UW fired 18 total shots and nine on goal, led by Deines with six total shots. Junior Sarah Martinez (Des Moines, Wash.) and Stewart each had three shots.
Syracuse goalkeeper Brittany Anghel made five saves. The Orange fired seven shots and the one shot on goal came from Jasmine Watkins.
In the first game of the Husky/Nike Invitational, No. 4 Portland defeated Wisconsin 2-0. The tournament concludes Sunday as No. 4 Portland faces Syracuse at 11 a.m. followed by the Huskies hosting Wisconsin at 1:30 p.m.
