SEATTLE - After a slow start, the Husky women's soccer team battled back and was impressive in the second half and both overtime periods as they came away with a 1-1 draw against Wisconsin on Sunday afternoon at Husky Soccer Stadium. Washington improves to 3-1-1 on the year while Wisconsin is now 0-3-1.
The Badgers came out strong in the first half, firing six shots and taking control of the ball for much of the first 45 minutes. The lone goal for Wisconsin came in the 34th minute as Kodee Williams scored off of a ball that deflected off of Husky goalkeeper Jorde LaFontaine-Kussman.
The second half however, belonged to the Huskies. Washington outscored Wisconsin nine-to-four in the second half. The tying goal came in the 80th minute as Kellye Joswick (Placentia, Calif.) sent a free kick into the box and Kendyl Pele (Kennewick, Wash.) headed it home. It was the first goal of the season for Pele the just the second of her career for the senior defender. For fellow senior Joswick, it was her third assist of the year, a team-high.
After two 10 minute overtime periods, the game ended in a draw. Wisconsin outshot Washington 3-2 in overtime.
LaFontaine-Kussman, a junior from Lakewood, Wash., improves to 1-1-1 on the year. She made two saves in the game.
The Huskies had 15 shots compared to just 13 for Wisconsin. McKenna Waitley led the team with six shots, three on goal.
"Overall we had two tough, physical teams to play against this weekend and today was a big physical challenge for us," said head coach Lesle Gallimore. "Wisconsin is a great team and their record is not reflective of how good they are. I'm really pleased with our group. We bounced back from last weekend well and came away with a win and a tie in a tough tournament. We are still tweaking some things and looking at players. We have high expectations for a lot of our younger players that are just getting used to playing teams back-to-back at this level on a Friday and a Sunday, so a lot of good lessons came out of it. All-in-all we did really good to come back. Kendyl was very impressive in the back and got the winning goal for us."
No. 4 Portland was declared the tournament champions with a perfect 2-0 record. UW finished second at 1-0-1, Wisconsin was third at 0-1-1 and Syracuse finished fourth at 0-0-2.
Husky junior captain Kate Deines (Issaquah, Wash.) was named the tournament Offensive MVP after scoring three goals in the first game vs. Syracuse on Friday. Elli Reed from Portland was named the Defensive MVP for helping her defense allow just one goal all weekend.
Washington hits the road again next week and will play in the Portland/Nike Invitational in Portland, Ore., against nationally-ranked Penn State and Rutgers.
