PORTLAND, Ore. - In another tough battle with a Big 10 team, the Washington Husky women's soccer team (4-1-1) came out on top with a hard fought 2-1 victory over Penn State (1-4-1) in Portland, Ore., Friday night.
The Dawgs controlled the ball most of the first half, taking the 2-0 lead at the half. Penn State came out in the second half and scored its only goal of the game late, making several attempts to tie or even take the lead. However, the Husky defense was sharp all night as seniors Kendyl Pele and Hannah Greig and freshmen Brianna Sweeney and Lindsey Bos were brilliant in the back.
"It was the second game in a row that we've played a tough Big 10 opponent," said head coach Lesle Gallimore. "Penn State is a great team but their record doesn't reflect that. It put a lot of pressure on us to come out and play a team that is hungry for a win. For the first time in a long time I felt really good but how we got on top of them by getting a 2-0 lead. We knew they would come back but we dodged a bullet and overall defensively we did a good job. It `s a huge win for us."
Jane Mitchell, a senior from San Diego, Calif., scored the first goal of the game for either team in the 10th minute. It was the first goal of the season for the midfielder and the second of her career. The goal came from 25 yards out and was assisted by senior McKenna Waitley (Coronado, Calif.). It's the 10th career assist for Waitley and her first of the season.
The second goal of the game for the Huskies came from junior Kate Deines (Issaquah, Wash.) in the 30th minute. The goal was scored on a free kick and the assist was from Pele (Kennewick, Wash.) It was the fourth goal of the season for Deines and the first assist for Pele.
The Penn State goal came in the 84th minute by Maya Hayes. The ball was deflected off of Husky goalkeeper Kari Davidson and put in the back of the net.
Davidson, junior from Portland, Ore., improves to 3-0 in goal for the Huskies. She made four saves in the game. Krissy Tribbett was the losing keeper for Penn State, making two saves.
Penn State outshot UW 15-8 and 8-2 in the second half. Penn State also led in corner kicks, 3-2.
Washington concludes play in Portland on Sunday, taking on No. 24 Rutgers at noon.
