PORTLAND, Ore. - After a scoreless first half, No. 24 Rutgers (5-2-0) scored a goal late in the second half to pick up the 1-0 victory over the Washington Huskies (4-2-1) in women's soccer non-conference action in Portland, Ore., Sunday afternoon.
Washington outshot Rutgers 12-7 but the Scarlet Knights were able to get the winning goal in the back off the net in the 71st minute. The goal was off of a header by Tricia DiPaolo. The assist came from Julie Lancos and Jonelle Filigno off of the corner kick.
"We expected another challenging game, it was a hard fought game," said head coach Lesle Gallimore. "We came out well for a Sunday in the first half. We had opportunities and we had time and space and possession we just need to be more consistent in front of the net. I thought we were the better team and we looked good but as it wore on Rutgers grinded things out and we had a defensive lapse on the goal. We had a great chance late in the game but time ran out. We did a lot more things right in this loss then we did in our win Friday."
Senior McKenna Waitley (Coronado, Calif.) had the first shot of the game for either team in the fifth minute, it was blocked in the box and she shot again off of the rebound but it was wide right.
Rutgers took its first shot in the sixth minute; it was also blocked in the box.
UW had a great opportunity to tie the game late, when junior Alex Webber's (Poway, Calif.) shot hit the post in the 88th minute.
Waitley and freshman Lindsay Elston (Sammamish, Wash.) led the team with three shots each.
Junior Jorde LaFontaine-Kussmann (Lakewood, Wash.) got the start in goal for the Huskies. She made two saves, one in each half, and allowed the one goal. Her record is 1-2-1.
Washington had five corner kicks to just three for Rutgers.
The Huskies return to Husky Soccer Stadium next week, taking on Cleveland State on Friday, Sept. 17th at 7 p.m. It will be the lone game of the week for the Huskies.
