SEATTLE - The pouring rain in Seattle Friday night didn't stop the Washington women's soccer team from being explosive around the net as five different Huskies scored goals in the 5-1 win over Cleveland State at Husky Soccer Stadium.
The Huskies improve to 5-2-1 on the year while the Vikings fall to 4-3-2 in the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
"Cleveland State did what we thought they were going to do," said head coach Lesle Gallimore. "They came out and pressed a bit early on and made it difficult for us and took us out of our rhythm, but as the game wore on we stuck to the game plan and created more chances."
The game was back-and-forth early on but then the Huskies starting taking control of the ball midway through the first half. The first goal came from junior Kate Deines (Issaquah, Wash.) in the 37th minute. It was the fifth goal of the season for the captain. The assist came from junior Kelli Stewart (Mukilteo, Wash.). It was the second assist of the season for Stewart, tying a team-high.
"Anytime you can get a goal in you get some breathing room and can start playing your game and that's what we did," Gallimore said. "It was a great corner and great job by Kate (on her birthday) to get on the back post and putting it away."
The Dawgs made it 2-0 just before halftime with a great shot by Stewart in the 41st minute. From the right side about 25 yards out, Stewart looked like she was going to cross, but instead put the ball in the top left corner. It was her first goal of the season and the fifth of her career.
At the half, UW took nine shots and four on goal. In the second half, the Huskies had 15 shots, eight on goal. Cleveland State didn't take any shots in the first half.
Freshman Annie Sittauer (Everett, Wash.) struck for the game's third goal and her second as a Husky. Her goal in the 47th minute was on a cross that came from sophomore Kelsea Brajkovich (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) on the right side. Sittauer was directly in front of the goal for the tap in. It's the first assist for Brajkovich in her young Husky career.
Sittauer kept the pressure on the Cleveland State defenders, firing another great shot just two minutes later but it was saved by the Viking goalkeeper. Sittauer led the Huskies with six shots and three on goal.
Sittauer was also a part of the fourth goal, earning the assist on a cross to the left corner for junior Faustine Dufka (San Francisco, Calif.) in the 59th minute. It was the first career goal for Dufka and second career assist for Sittauer.
The fifth and final Husky goal was off of a corner kick by junior Sarah Martinez (Des Moines, Wash.) in the 75th minute. Dufka was credited with the assist, the first of her career. It was also the first career goal for Martinez.
"The contribution from the players off of the bench was huge," Gallimore said. "For Annie, Faustine and Kelsea to get in the stat column that was big for them. To not play many minutes leading up to this and getting the minutes tonight they made the most of them. Sarah getting her first goal of the year is huge for us because she has worked so hard and created so many chances for us."
Cleveland State got on the board with its only shot on goal of the night in the 83rd minute. It was a tough shot by Natalie Daniels off of the right post that ricocheted into the net. She leads all Viking players with seven goals on the season.
Junior Jorde LaFontaine-Kussmann (Lakewood, Wash.) got the win in goal for the Huskies, improving to 2-2-1. Sophomore Dani Boross earned minutes for the first time in her career, playing the last 17 minutes of the game.
"We were happy to get Dani some minutes," Gallimore added. "We would've loved the shutout but there was nothing she could do about that goal. But Dani cleared some good balls and it was good for her to get her feet wet tonight and good for Jorde to pick up a win."
Cleveland State's Kelly Zinkiewich picked up the loss. She allowed two goals and made two saves in the first half. Parisa Sadrnia played and started the entire second half, allowing three goals and making five saves.
The Huskies have the rest of the weekend off before heading to California next week to take on St. Mary's and San Francisco.
