MORAGA, Calif. - The Husky women's soccer team won its second-straight match with a 3-1 victory over St. Mary's (CA) in Moraga, Calif., Friday night. The Dawgs improve to 6-2-1 on the year while St. Mary's falls to 6-2-2.
Junior Jorde LaFontaine-Kussmann (Lakewood, Wash.) picked up her third win in goal, improving to 3-2-1 on the year. She made five saves and allowed just one goal.
The Huskies took a 1-0 lead into the half as freshman Lindsay Elston (Sammamish, Wash.) scored her first career goal in the 36th minute. She dribbled through the defense and shot from 16 yards out.
All three second half goals came within 10 minutes.
The winning goal came in the 51st minute from junior Alex Webber (Poway, Calif.). It was her first goal of the season and the fourth of her career. She scored 13 yards out off of the left post after a pass from Sarah Martinez. It was the first career assist for the junior from Des Moines, Wash.
The lone goal for St. Mary's was a header off of a corner kick by Alex Cilento in the 58th minute. The assist came from Caroline Shevlin.
Junior Kate Deines (Issaquah, Wash.) scored her team-high sixth goal in the 60th minute; a header off of a corner kick from Kellye Joswick. For Joswick, a senior from Placentia, Calif., it was her third assist of the season, a team-high.
"We started really well," said head coach Lesle Gallimore. "We had great chances early on but St. Mary's took us out of our rhythm. Lindsay (Elston) had a great goal and put us up 1-0 at the half. I don't think we played great minutes in the first half and in the second half we responded well. Jorde (LaFontaine-Kussmann) made a game-changing save in the second half and then we got our second goal from Alex (Webber). Their (St. Mary's) goal was a great shot of the far post. Kate (Deines) responded well though just a couple of minutes later for the third goal. We played better in the second half and wore them down. Everyone came in off the bench and we are pleased with the win."
UW outshot St. Mary's 14-11. Both teams had six shots on goal. Sarah Peters was the goalkeeper for the Gaels, making three saves.
Washington also had four corner kicks to just one for St. Mary's and the foul count was 11-8, St. Mary's.
Webber led the team with four shots off of the bench. Martinez was second with three shots while Joswick and Elston each had two shots, respectively.
The Huskies conclude their California road trip by taking on San Francisco at 1 p.m. Sunday.
