BOSTON, Mass. - After an impressive win at UMass on Friday, the Husky women's soccer team dropped its first match of the season, 3-0 at Boston University on Sunday night. The Huskies are now 2-1 while BU improves to 1-2.
Both teams had 13 shots a piece and the Huskies had seven shots on goal, led by senior McKenna Waitley (Coronado, Calif.) with three.
"Boston is a very good team and they are tough," said head coach Lesle Gallimore. "I thought we started the game fine, it went back and forth. With that said, we didn't look composed in front of the net. Once they got a goal we struggled a little bit. The second half we didn't come out the way we are capable of. As a young team it was a gut check and hopefully we can rebound for next week because Syracuse and Wisconsin are two good teams. We are good team too but we are young and we need to rely on the young players to gain experience like they did tonight and use it to our benefit for the next game. Our veterans have to carry the younger players as well. We got to figure out how to combine youth with experience because there is no doubt in my mind that we are good enough to win these games."
The first shot for either team in the sixth minute, which was sent wide by junior Kelli Stewart (Mukilteo, Wash.).
Boston's first shot came in the 13th minute by Lina Cords followed by a shot just two seconds later by Jessica Morrow. Both shots were blocked.
In the 26th minute, Waitley fired the first shot on goal for either team before it was saved by Terrier goalkeeper Kelly King.
Washington's Jorde LaFontaine-Kussman, a junior from Lakewood, Wash., earned her second-straight start in goal and made her first save of the game in the 31st minute off of a shot by Tiya Gallegos.
Another great opportunity came for the Dawgs in the 26th minute as freshman Lindsay Elston (Sammamish, Wash.) took a shot on goal as King picked up her second save of the day. Less than a minute later, Elston took her second shot of the day but sent it high.
In the 40th minute Boston scored the first goal of the season against UW, as Jessica Luscinksi netted her first goal of the year.
The Terriers took the 1-0 lead into halftime and came out in the second half determined to add to their lead with two quick shots on goal. Luscinski fired her second strong shot of the day but this time it was saved by the Husky keeper in the 50th minute.
In the 53rd minute, BU scored goal number two with Emma Clark putting it in, assisted by Shauna Kelleher.
