SEATTLE - It couldn't have been a better game or moment for Kellye Joswick to return to the field. The redshirt senior from Placentia, Calif., scored the lone goal in the 78th minute as the Huskies defeated Seattle University, 1-0, at Championship Field to open the season for both teams. It was the second-straight season UW opened up with a win over Seattle.
Joswick missed all of 2009 after a season-ending ACL tear in the fourth minute of the season-opener vs. Seattle. After working hard in the offseason to get back to the field, she got the start and took a ball from Sarah Martinez to the far post for the goal.
"Going in I was super nervous but just really excited to get on the field," Joswick said. "Our team did a really good job. It was a team effort getting the ball up the field and it happened really fast. Sarah (Martinez) played a ball through a player's legs and I struck it in the far post."
The Huskies out-shot the Redhawks 17-11 in the game and 9-6 in the first half. Senior McKenna Waitley had six shots, four on goal.
Seattle had two great shots, one in each half that went off the goal posts and were nearly in the net.
Kate Deines had three shots for UW, followed by Joswick, Kelli Stewart and Alli Beahan with two and Jane Mitchell and Lindsay Elston with one each.
Goalkeeper Kari Davidson recorded the shutout and recorded one save in the game. It is her eighth career shutout in goal and 20th victory.
"Seattle is always going to be a difficult match for us because it's a cross-town rivalry," said head coach Lesle Gallimore. "Overall I was pleased with how we stuck to the game plan, made some adjustments, kept the ball and kept Seattle out towards the end of the half. The biggest story of the game is Kellye and Sarah. For them to come back from their injuries and work as hard as they have, you couldn't have scripted that better."
For the Redhawks, they drop to 0-1 on the season. They were led by Kara Kuttler with four shots and the only shot on goal. Madison Goverde, the goalkeeper, made six saves.
Washington has the rest of the week off and will return to the field next week traveling to the East Coast to take on UMass and Boston.
