Cougs Beat Diamond Dawgs, 7-1

PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State used homers from Jared Prince, Jay Ponciano and Matt Argyropoulos to beat Washington, 7-1, Saturday at Bailey-Brayton Field in the second of a three-game, Pac-10 series.
The loss dropped the Huskies to 25-29 overall and 13-13 in the Pac-10 while the Cougars, who will finish in second place in the league, improved to 30-23 overall and 18-8 in the conference, probably now having wrapped up an NCAA tournament at-large berth.
Cougars starter Chad Arnold (7-3) went five and two-thirds innings for the win. He held the Huskies scoreless on two hits while walking four and striking out eight.
Husky starter Tyler Cheney (2-3) suffered the loss. In three innings, he gave up three runs on three hits.
WSU opened the scoring in the second when Prince led off with his sixth homer of the season. After the homer, Derek Jones was hit by a pitch and Ponciano singled to put two more aboard. After a bunt moved them both up, Jones scored on Matt Fanelli double and Ponciano crossed on a Cody Bartlett groundout to give the Cougars a 3-0 lead after two.
In the fourth, Ponciano greeted UW freshman reliever Aaron West with a leadoff homer, making it 4-0. Later in the fourth, Argyropoulos hit a solo homer to boost the lead to 5-0.
WSU added to its lead in the fifth when Ponciano drilled a bases-loaded single to left-center to score two more, making it a 7-0 advantage.
In the ninth, UW first baseman Troy Scott belted a two-out solo homer, his 11th of the year, to break up the shutout bid. He had all three of the UW's hits in the game.
