PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State overcame an early 5-1 lead, scoring three in the sixth and four in the seventh, and handed Washington a 10-5 loss in the final game of the regular season Sunday at Bailey-Brayton Field.
The Cougars wrapped up their first three-game sweep over the Huskies since 1984 and their first sweep of any length over the UW since 1991, when WSU swept a two-game set.
The Huskies finished the year 25-30 overall and 13-14 in the Pac-10 Conference. WSU improved to 31-23 overall and 19-8 in the conference.
Cougar reliever Connor Lambert (2-1), who entered the game in the sixth, picked up the win. He worked two scoreless innings for the victory.
UW freshman starter Andrew Kittredge (4-5) suffered the loss. The right-hander from Spokane worked six and one-third innings, allowing seven runs (six earned) on nine hits, one walk and five strikeouts.
The Huskies got a break to score the game's first run in the top of the first. Doug Cherry belted a one-out triple off the wall in right-center. Jake Rife followed with a popup on the infield, but it was lost in the sun and dropped just behind the bag at second, allowing Cherry to score. After a second out, Troy Scott belted a triple down the right-field line, driving in Rife to give the UW an early 2-0 lead.
In the second, WSU got a run back as Jared Prince led off with a double, moved to third on a balk and scored on a Shea Vucinich ground ball, cutting the UW lead to 2-1.
In the third, with Cherry and Rife aboard, Scott laced a line drive to the corner that dropped in off the glove of left fielder Derek Jones, leading to two more runs. Scott scored on a single from Jacob Clem to make it 5-1.
In the bottom of the third, a two-run homer from Cougar catcher Jay Ponciano cut the Husky advantage to 5-3.
The Cougars went ahead with a three-run, two-out rally in the sixth inning. After two quick outs, a hit batter and a double put runners at second and third. Pinch hitter Patrick Claussen followed with an infield single, but an errant throw from UW second baseman Doug Cherry allowed a second run to score and Claussen to move to second. A single from Garry Kuykendall plated Claussen to put the Cougars on top, 6-5.
Cherry had four hits in five at bats to lead the Huskies while Caleb Brown was 3-for-4 with a walk.
In the seventh, the Cougars put the game out of reach with four more runs. A triple from Shea Vucinich scored two and a pair of groundballs plated two more to make it 10-5.
