SEATTLE - Shauna Stapleton scored a pair of unassisted goals Friday, leading Purdue to a 3-1 win over host Washington in the first round of the Husky/Nike Invitational at Husky Soccer Field.
The Huskies dropped to 0-3, losing their home opener for the first time since 1999. The Boilermakers' record improved to 2-1-1.
Senior Dani Bridges (Maple Valley, Wash./Tahoma) put UW in front at 12:15 with her first goal of the season. She ran on to a pass from sophomore Veronica Perez-Murillo (San Mateo, Calif.) and slid an eight-yard shot inside the left post.
That lead was short-lived as Stapleton tallied the equalizer at 17:53, lofting a free kick over UW goalkeeper Taylor Carr (Culver City, Calif.) from 35 yards away.
Stapleton's second goal also came on a set piece as she curved a corner kick into the upper corner at 30:58.
"Of the three games we played so far, that was the best soccer we've played," said UW coach Lesle Gallimore. "We played well for 90 minutes except for those first two goals. Those were poor goals.
"When you are playing well and you go up 1-0, to give up goals like that it kills you. It killed our momentum."
The Boilermakers secured the win at 87:28 on a low 12-yard drive by Loredana Riverso.
Carr registered three saves for the Huskies, who were out shot 12-6. Purdue's Jenny Bradfisch saved two shots.
In the opening game of the tournament, top-ranked Portland held off Cal State Fullerton 2-1 behind goals by Rachael Rapinoe and Elli Reed.
The Pilots (2-0) opened the scoring in the third minute on Rapinoe's goal from close range off a pass from Michelle Enyeart. The Titans answered just over three minutes later on a 15-yard volley from Jenae Gibbens off a Nicole Scheid cross.
Reed netted the game-winner at 36:48 on a 15-yard blast.
The tournament teams exchange opponents Sunday with Purdue and Portland meeting at 11 a.m. and the Huskies squaring off with Fullerton at 1:30 p.m.
"All we can do is hope that we come out and play as well on Sunday as we did tonight and don't give up soft goals," Gallimore concluded.
