SEATTLE - Senior forward Ely Allen's first career hat trick helped lift Washington to a 3-1 victory over No. 25/18 San Diego State in Pac-10 men's soccer action at Husky Soccer Field, Friday evening.
The victory snapped a four-game winless streak for the Huskies (6-5-2, 1-2-1 Pac-10) who also picked up their first Pac-10 win of the season. UW snapped San Diego State's eight-game unbeaten streak and handed the Aztecs (7-2-3, 3-1-0 Pac-10) their first Pac-10 loss of the year.
Allen powered the UW offense with goals in the 41st, 65th and 88th minutes of the match, upping his season total to seven. The only score of the game for the Aztecs came on a penalty kick by Kraig Chiles in the 89th minute. The three-goal output by the Huskies was the most scored by UW since a 5-1 win back on Sept. 2 versus Cal State Bakersfield.
"We were really hoping this would be a turning point for us," UW head coach Dean Wurzberger said. "We had a great week of training and you give yourself a chance to win if you train well. We said we've been goal-starved and Ely has a hat trick. Goals can change games and his first gave us a lift before halftime and the second was well-timed. George John was absolutely magnificent in the center of midfield, controlling that area. Those were our two key men in terms of having an impact on the game, but everyone did their job for the team. It's our first Pac-10 win so we're excited."
The teams battled slick and rainy conditions all game with many downpours occurring throughout the 90 minutes, including both at the beginning and the end of the match.
The conditions didn't seem to bother Allen who put the Huskies up 1-0 just before halftime after receiving a cross from senior midfielder Derek Crismier from the right side of the box and slotting a 10-yard shot to the far post past Aztec goalkeeper Jorge Rosales.
Allen's second goal came at 64:55 when he beat the SDSU the defense down the left side of the box and nailed another shot to the far post. Allen sealed the game at 87:43 when he intercepted an errant pass back from an Aztec defender to the goalkeeper in front of the goal to tally his third score.
San Diego State thwarted the shutout when a foul in the box set up a penalty kick attempt at 88:59 which Aztec leading scorer Kraig Chiles drove past UW goalkeeper Stephen Fung.
Fung made three saves on the night, while Rosales tallied four. Allen led the Huskies with five shots, while freshman forward Ellis McLoughlin had four. Chiles and Steve Beitshour led the Aztecs with three shots apiece.
The Husky win is the first over San Diego State since the Aztecs joined the Pac-10 in 2005. Prior to Friday night, the Huskies had posted a loss and three ties versus SDSU the last two seasons.
Washington will look to continue its momentum when it hosts UCLA, Sunday, Oct. 21, at 1 p.m. at Husky Soccer Field.
