CORVALLIS, Ore. - Fifth-ranked Oregon State scored two runs in the seventh to break a 3-3 tie and emerge from a back-and-forth game with a 5-3 win over the No. 22 Washington baseball team Saturday in the second game of a three-game, Pac-10 series at Goss Stadium.
A sellout crowd of 2,327 watched the Pac-10-leading Beavers improve to 33-12 on the season and 10-4 in conference play while knotting the series at one win apiece. Washington fell to 31-18 overall and 9-8 in the Pac-10.
For the third straight inning, the Beavers loaded the bases with one out in the seventh. UW lefty Nick Hagadone came on in relief and threw a 1-2 pitch to the backstop allowing Shea McFeely to score from third, giving Oregon State a 4-3 advantage. After a strikeout and an intentional walk, John Wallace singled home another run to increase the lead to 5-3.
The Beavers scored the game's first run in the bottom of the second as Cole Gillespie, who was hit by a pitch to open the inning, eventually came around on a two-out single from DH Mike Lissman.
Washington came right back with a two-out run of their own in the top of the third. With runners at first and second with two down, sophomore Matt Hague lined a single up the middle to tie the game at 1-1.
OSU had a chance to go back on top in the bottom of the third when, with Chris Kunda at first with two outs, Gillespie lined a double off the left-field fence, but Kunda was thrown out at the plate trying to score, ending the inning with the 1-1 tie in tact.
In the fourth, the Huskies got a two-out RBI single from right fielder Cory Rickard, but OSU tied the game in the bottom of the inning on a solo homer from McFeely, the Beavers' senior from Federal Way.
The UW took back the lead in the fifth when Hague doubled and eventually scored on a Curt Rindal sacrifice fly.
After failing to score despite loading the bases with one out in the fifth, OSU loaded the bases with one down in the sixth inning. Freshman reliever Nick Haughian took over for starter Kyle Parker and walked the only batter he faced to force in the tying run. However, UW freshman Bryce Mooney came on and got a strikeout and a groundout to end the threat with the score tied at 3-3.
The Huskies had a chance to move back in front in the seventh, but Rickard was thrown out at the plate trying to score from third on a pitch that caromed off of the backstop.
Washington got the tying runs on base with two outs in the ninth as Hague walked and Zach Clem singled, but Rindal flied out to left to end the game.
OSU reliever Eddie Kunz (4-1) picked up the victory, throwing two-thirds of an inning. All-America closer Kevin Gunderson worked the final two innings to earn his league- leading 15th save. Mooney (3-2) suffered the loss for the UW.
Sunday's rubber game gets underway at 1:00 p.m. The game will air live in the Seattle area on KKNW AM-1150.
