SEATTLE - The 22nd-ranked Washington baseball team couldn't overcome an early deficit as the NAIA's top-ranked team, Lewis-Clark State, handed the Huskies a 9-7 loss Tuesday night at Husky Ballpark.
L-C State (39-4), which had a 26-game win streak broken last weekend, used a six-run third inning to build a 7-1 lead and never trailed. Washington (30-17) rallied for one in the seventh and four in the eighth to close the gap, but couldn't come all the way back.
Washington first baseman Curt Rindal went 3-for-4 with a homer, a double and a single while third baseman Matt Stevens homered and doubled for the UW.
L-C starter Shannon Wirth picked up the win to improve to 5-0 on the year. He allowed two runs on five hits over six innings. Chris Kissock, the Warrior's ace, picked up the save, throwing three innings. He allowed five runs, but only one was earned.
Husky freshman starter Tyler Cheney (1-5) suffered the loss, allowing seven runs on seven hits over two and one-third innings. UW relievers Brandon McKerney, Bryce Mooney and Nick Hagadone held L-C State to only one earned run over the final six and two-thirds.
Lewis-Clark State got off to a quick start when leadoff hitter Mark Thompson opened the game with his first home run of the season, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead. In the second, Stevens launched his 14th homer of the year to tie the game at 1-1.
In the top of the third, the Warriors exploded for six runs on six hits and a walk. After Zach Adam's leadoff homer, Justin Fuller drove in a run with a double and then scored on a Matt Vogel single. Vogel scored all the way from first on a double from Jessie Mier and first baseman Jose Castenon capped the rally with a two-run homer, giving the Warriors a 7-1 lead.
Washington got one run back in the fourth on a solo home run from Rindal, his ninth of the year.
The teams traded late runs and the UW entered the eighth inning trailing, 9-3. However, three L-C State errors in the eighth led to four Husky runs. With two on and no outs, second baseman Justin Fuller mishandled a possible double-play ball, allowing one run to score. Stevens followed and, after a foul ball was dropped by first baseman Castenon, he doubled to drive in another.
Danny Cox followed with a grounder to Castenon, who tried to cut down the lead runner at the plate, but threw wildly, allowing two more runs to score, cutting the Warriors' lead to 9-7.
The Huskies travel to face No. 5 Oregon State in a three-game, Pac-10 series this weekend in Corvallis. All three games will air live on KKNW AM-1150.
