TEMPE, Ariz. - J.J. Sferra drove in the winning run with an RBI single through a drawn- in infield to lead the 13th-ranked Arizona State baseball team to an 8-7, 11-inning win over Washington Sunday at Packard Stadium.
ASU (25-10 overall, 4-2 in the Pac-10) had scored a run in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings. The Devils took the three-game series with two wins. Washington dropped to 22-13 overall and 4-5 in conference play.
In the 11th, ASU catcher Preston Paramore singled to lead off. After a sacrifice bunt and an infield single put runners at the corners with one out, Sferra, the Devils' sophomore center fielder came through, poking a single through the left side.
UW closer Elliott Cribby (4-3), who came on in the eighth, took the loss while ASU's Brett Bordes, who worked the final one and two-thirds innings, picked up the win to improve to 5-1.
With the score at 6-6 in the eighth, the Huskies broke the tie in controversial fashion. With runners at first and third with one out, freshman Danny Cox grounded a ball to short. After an out at second, the throw to first to complete the double play was judged to be late, allowing Jake Rife to score to put the UW in front, 7-6. The call resulted in a heated argument from ASU coach Pat Murphy.
The Devils got a leadoff double from Willy Fox in the bottom of the ninth. Fox scored on a one-out, pinch-hit single from Seth Dhaenens to tie the score at 7-7. However, after an intentional walk loaded the bases with two outs, Husky second baseman Ryan Anderson made a spectacular diving stop in the hole and got the throw the first in time to get the out and send the game into extra innings.
Anderson led off the third inning with a homer to left to get the Huskies' on the board. It was Anderson's second home run of the season and first since opening day. Matt Hague followed with a double and, after an out, scored on a double from Curt Rindal to give the Huskies a 2-0 lead.
ASU came back with a run in the bottom of the third, scoring in unusual circumstances. With one out and Eric Sogard at first on a single, DH Ike Davis flied a ball to foul territory in left. UW left fielder Zach Clem made a long run and caught the ball as he ran into and flipped over a short fence. Sogard tagged up and took second as Clem made his way back onto the field and, thanks to that extra base, was able to score on a single from Willy Fox to cut the Husky lead to 2-1.
The UW stretched the lead back to two runs in the fourth when, a two-out double from Hague drove in Brett Kaluza. In the bottom of the fourth, ASU's Matt Hall singled and scored on a double from C.J. Retherford to make it a 3-2 Husky lead.
Rindal led off the top off the fifth with a home run, his eighth of the season and, later in the inning, an RBI single from shortstop Danny Cox drove in Matt Lane to increase the UW advantage to 5-2. In the sixth, a bases-loaded groundout from Bradley Boyer made it 6-2, though for the second straight inning, the UW left the bases loaded.
ASU tied the score with a four-run sixth inning. After the first two hitters in the inning reached on a hit-by-pitch and a double, Issaquah High grad Colin Curtis belted his third homer of the year to cut the lead to one run. Later, with runners at the corners and one out, Fox grounded to third. After getting an out at second, the relay onto first base was just late, allowing Brett Wallace to score the tying run.
The Huskies return to Seattle for a three-game, non-conference series vs. Brigham Young this Thursday through Saturday. Gametime Thursday and Friday is 6:30 p.m. while Saturday's first pitch has been moved to noon (it was 1:00 p.m.). Either live audio or live video of all three games will be available on the "Dawg Channel" at gohuskies.com.
