SEATTLE - The University of British Columbia baseball team broke a 4-4 tie with two runs in the top of the eighth and held on for a 6-4 win over Washington Tuesday night at Husky Ballpark.
While the game counted towards the Thunderbirds' record, it served as an exhibition for the Huskies, who played mostly reserves. UBC, which plays a schedule of entirely American college opposition as a member of the NAIA, improved to 29-7 with the win. The T-Birds have won 25 of their last 26.
UBC reliever Brendan Rolfe (1-1) picked up the victory. After giving up a run that tied the game at 4-4, he went on to work two innings. Husky freshman lefty Adrian Gomez, who gave up two runs in two innings, took the loss.
In the bottom of the first, freshman left fielder Jake Rife gave the Huskies a 1-0 lead when he lined a homer down the right-field line.
In the third, UBC tied the game on an RBI double off the center field wall from Mark Capone. Later in the inning, Capone scored on a hit from Steve Bell-Irving and Connor Janes and Tyler Hughes drove runs with singles to put the Thunderbirds on top, 4-1.
In the bottom of the third, Husky right fielder Jesse Ferguson doubled and scored on a single from Bradley Boyer to make it 4-2. In the fifth, the Huskies cut the lead to 4-3 when Danny Cox was hit by a pitch and eventually scored on a Ferguson sacrifice fly.
Washington tied the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the sixth. Nick Burnham led off with a walk and eventually came around on a bunt single from Cory Rickard.
UBC took the lead back in the top of the seventh. Capone singled and eventually game around on an error by UW shortstop Bradley Boyer. Johnny Yiu, who reached on a walk, then scored on a Janes single to put UBC on top, 6-4.
Capone and Janes each had three hits to lead the Thunderbirds at the plate. The Huskies were led offensively by Ferguson, who had a double and an RBI in two at bats.
The win was the Thunderbirds' third of the year over a Division I team and first ever over the UW. Earlier this season, UBC beat Cal State Northridge and Pepperdine.
Next up for the UW is a three-game, non-conference series vs. Brigham Young this Thursday through Saturday. Game time Thursday and Friday is 6:30 p.m. while Saturday's first pitch has been moved to noon (it was 1:00 p.m.). Either live audio or live video of all three games will be available on the "Dawg Channel" at gohuskies.com.
