Big Inning Leads ASU To 12-7 Win Over UW

TEMPE, Ariz. - After scratching back from a 6-2 deficit to tie the game at 6-6, the Washington baseball team gave up six runs in the seventh as 13th-ranked Arizona State beat the Huskies, 12-7, Saturday at Packard Stadium.
The ASU win drew the three-game, Pac-10 series even at one win apiece. The Devils improved to 24-10 overall and 3-2 in conference play. Washington fell to 22-12 and 4-4.
Sun Devils reliever Tony Barnette (1-1), a senior from Jefferson High in Federal Way, picked up the victory. Husky freshman reliever Bryce Mooney (3-1) suffered the loss.
After the UW had tied the game on a solo homer from Curt Rindal in the top of the seventh, the momentum swung back in the Devils' direction quickly though as three Husky errors in the bottom of the seventh led to six ASU runs. With the bases loaded and no outs, catcher Preston Paramore broke the tie with his second two-run double of the afternoon. An RBI single from Matt Hall, a passed ball and a two-out, two-run error from UW center fielder Matt Hague led to the other four runs as the Devils stretched the lead to 12-6.
ASU scored the games first run in the bottom of the second. Ike Davis led off by lofting a ball to center. Hague lost the high fly ball in the sun and it dropped near the warning track for a triple. After a hit batter and a popup, Devils third baseman C.J. Retherford executed a safety squeeze bunt to score Davis, giving Arizona State an early 1-0 lead.
In the third, UW catcher Matt Lane drew a two-out walk and then scored all the way from first when Rindal drilled a double deep to the left-center field gap, tying the game a 1-1.
The Sun Devils used a two-out rally to move back in front in the bottom of the third. With two outs and none on, Brett Wallace, Davis and Eric Sogard each knocked singles, the last of which drove in one run. Paramore then doubled into the left-field corner, driving in two more to make it a 4-1 ASU lead.
Rindal came through again with two outs in the fifth. With Jake Rife aboard at second base, Rindal singled through the left side to cut the Devils lead to 4-2. The Huskies had a chance to go in front later in the inning when, with two runners on, Kyle Conley's long flyball to right field was caught up against the fence by ASU's Colin Curtis.
However, ASU came right back in the bottom of the fifth. Willy Fox led off with a double and then scored on a single from Wallace. Later in the inning, a two-out RBI single from Paramore increased the ASU lead to 6-2.
Washington got back in the game in the top of the sixth when Hague's fourth home run of the season, a two-out, three-run liner to right, drew the UW back within a run at 6-5. In the sixth, Rindal led off with his seventh homer of the year to tie the game at 6-6.
The UW scored a seventh run in the ninth on a pinch-hit, RBI double from Trevor Petersen. Rindal finished the game 3-for-4 with three RBI while Hague had the Huskies' other three runs batted in on his homer. Paramore led the Sun Devils, going 3- for-5 with five RBI.
