SEATTLE - A two-out single in the 11th inning from UCLA third baseman Eric Taylor Jr. drove in a run to break a 2-2 tie as the Bruins emerged from a pitchers' duel with a 3-2 win over the Washington baseball team Saturday at Husky Ballpark.
With two outs in the 11th, Sean Smith doubled off of Husky closer Elliott Cribby. Taylor followed with a single to left to plate Smith. In the bottom of the 11th, the Huskies got a one-out double from Kyle Conley, but Bruins reliever Paul Oseguera (1-0) got the final two outs to secure the win.
Cribby (3-2) took the loss, allowing a run on two hits over two and one-third innings. The Huskies, who beat UCLA 5-0 Friday, fell to 19-11 overall and 2-3 in Pac-10 play. The Bruins improved to 16-12 and 1-1 in conference.
Held scoreless through the first eight innings, the Huskies used a Bruins error to rally for two runs in the bottom of the ninth. After a leadoff single from Curt Rindal and a walk to Zach Clem put two aboard with one out, Trevor Petersen grounded a would-be double play ball to third. However, after Taylor tagged third for one out, his throw to first was wild, keeping the inning alive with runners at second and third.
Matt Stevens followed with another grounder to third. Taylor made a diving stab, but his throw to first wasn't in time, allowing Clem to score. Pinch hitter Ryan Anderson followed with a chopper that bounded over Taylor into left, tying the game at 2-2.
Neither starting pitcher figured in the decision despite strong performances. UCLA's Dave Huff threw nine innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on 10 hits, one walk and seven strikeouts. Husky freshman Tyler Cheney worked eight and two-thirds innings, surrendering two runs (one earned) on eight hits and no walks.
UCLA took a 1-0 lead in the third. With Blair Dunlap aboard at first with two outs, Chris Jensen flied to a ball to right-center that dropped between center fielder Matt Hague and right fielder Kyle Conley. Dunlap came around to score after Hague bobbled the ball in the outfield.
In the top of the seventh, Bruins center fielder Josh Roenicke, the son of former big leaguer Gary Roenicke, hit his first home run of the season into the visitors' bullpen in left, giving UCLA a 2-0 lead.
Bradley Boyer, Stevens and Hague each had two hits to lead the Huskies' offense. Rindal extended his hitting streak to 19 games with an infield single in the ninth.
The series concludes with a 1:00 p.m. game Sunday. The game will air live on radio on KKNW AM-1150.
