BERKELEY, Calif. - California's Tyson Ross out-dueled fellow freshman Tyler Cheney of Washington as the Golden Bears eked out a 2-1 win over the Huskies Saturday at Evans Diamond in the second game of a three-game Pac-10 series.
Ross (4-2) threw eight innings for the win, allowing one run on only three hits. He walked five and struck out seven.
Reliever Jeremy Burchett took over in the ninth after Ross walked the leadoff hitter. After a strikeout and a single put runners at first and second with two outs, Husky second baseman Ryan Anderson singled to center field. Pinch runner Bradley Boyer, trying to score the tying run from second base, was thrown out at the plate by center fielder Brennan Boesch on a play that was vehementy argued by the Huskies' players and coaches. Burchett nonetheless picked up a the save, his first.
Cheney, a lefty from Richland, Wash., suffered the loss to fall to 1-3 on the season. Cheney surrendered two runs on seven hits, no walks and three strikeouts in six and two- thirds innings.
The loss dropped the Huskies to 17-9 overall and 0-2 in Pac-10 Conference play while Cal improved to 14-10 and 2-0.
Neither team was able to string together a rally through the first five and a half-innings. Cal shortstop Allen Craig finally broke the scoreless deadlock with a long home run to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning. It was Craig's fifth homer of the season.
The Huskies replied quickly with a run of their own in the top of the seventh. After singles from Matt Lane and Curt Rindal and a walk to Zach Clem loaded the bases, a sacrifice fly from freshman Kyle Conley sent Lane home to knot the score at 1-1.
Cal, however, answered back in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs and Travis Howell aboard on a bunt single, first baseman Mike Van Winden tripled down the right- field line to put the Bears back on top, 2-1.
The series concludes with a 1:00 p.m. game Sunday. The game will air live on radio on KKNW AM-1150.
