BERKELEY, Calif. - Junior ace Tim Lincecum threw eight shutout innings as the Washington baseball team avoided a weekend series sweep with a 5-0 win over California Sunday at Evans Diamond.
Lincecum (5-2) allowed five hits (all singles), walking three and striking out eight. Over his last 23 innings, Lincecum has allowed only eight hits and one earned run. Sophomore closer Elliott Cribby worked a scoreless ninth to preserve the shutout.
Washington improved to 18-9 overall and 1-2 in Pac-10 play with the win while the Golden Bears dropped to 14-11 and 2-1.
The Huskies took their first lead of the weekend in the first when Zach Clem's two-out single drove in Matt Hague to give the UW a 1-0 advantage.
In the fourth, Clem belted the first pitch from Cal starter Michael Cooper (1-3) deep over the left-field fence. The homer was Clem's ninth of the year, moving him into a tie for the Pac-10 lead in home runs alongside teammate Matt Stevens.
The UW added to the lead in the fifth. With shortstop Danny Cox aboard on a single and a stolen base, Hague went the other way to right field with his second homer of the year, increasing the lead to 4-0 and chasing Cooper from the game.
In the seventh, Husky first baseman Curt Rindal, who extended his hitting streak to 16 games with three hits on the day, drove in the UW's fifth run with a two-out single.
Rindal finished the game 3-for-5 with an RBI. Clem went 2-for-5 with two runs driven in and leadoff hitter Jake Rife was 2-for-3.
The series concludes with a 1:00 p.m. game Sunday. The game will air live on radio on KKNW AM-1150.
