HONOLULU - The Washington baseball team had its five-game winning streak come to an end Wednesday night as Hawaii scored seven of its 10 runs with two outs en route to a 10-6 win over the Huskies on the second day of the Rainbow Baseball Tournament at Les Murikami Stadium.
The loss dropped the Huskies to 10-3 on the season and 1-1 in the tournament. Hawaii, which lost to Texas-Arlington earlier Wednesday, improved to 12-4 on the season. All four teams in the tournament, including No. 11 Arkansas, are 1-1 in tourney play.
Husky freshman Adrian Gomez (0-1), in his second outing and first start, took the loss, allowing five runs on six hits over three and two-thirds innings. Hawaii senior starter Justin Costi (1-0) got the win, limiting the UW to just one run on five hits over six innings.
Husky right fielder Matt Hague led the UW hitter, going 3-for-4 with a triple. The sophomore also threw two innings of relief in his first pitching outing of the year.
In the second inning, Hawaii got the scoring started when Matt Inouye and Jorge Franco led off with back-to-back singles. After a sacrifice bunt moved the runners up, Eli Christensen drove in Inouye with a flyout to right. Shortstop Nathan Young followed with a single and the Rainbows pulled in front, 2-0.
In the fourth, Robbie Wilder drew a two-out walk with the bases loaded, forcing in Franco with the Rainbows third run and forcing Gomez from the game. Jonathan Hee lined the first pitch from reliever Bryce Mooney up the middle to drive in two more runs, extending the Hawaii lead to 5-0.
Hawaii tacked on two more in the fifth when Young, a freshman who came into the game 0-for-12 on the season, laced a two-out bases-loaded single to right, upping his team's lead to 7-0.
Washington finally got on the scoreboard in the sixth when Matt Hague singled and scored on a two-out single from Curt Rindal. However, the Rainbows stretched the lead back to seven runs in the bottom of the inning when a two-out RBI single from Inouye made it 8-1.
Hague tripled to lead off the eighth and scored on a groundout from Zach Clem to notch the UW's second run. Hawaii replied with two more in the bottom of the eighth, scoring on a Justin Frash single and a Franco sacrifice fly.
Washington rallied for four in the ninth, scoring two on a single from Brett Kaluza, another on a sacrifice fly from Hague and the fourth on a single from catcher Matt Lane.
Thursday, the UW faces Texas-Arlington in a 4:30 p.m. (PST) game at Murikami Stadium. A live audio broadcast of the game will air on the internet at gohuskies.com.
