HONOLULU - A pair of two-out, ninth-inning singles from Curt Rindal and Jake Rife drove in the tying and go-ahead runs as the Washington baseball team edged Texas-Arlington, 6-5, in a back-and-forth game at the Rainbow Baseball Tournament Thursday at Les Murikami Stadium.
The win improved the Huskies' record to 11-3 on the season and 2-1 in the Rainbow Baseball Tournament. UTA fell to 4-9 on the season and 1-2 in the tourney.
Texas-Arlington threatened in the ninth, loading the bases on a hit batter and two walks, but Husky lefty Nick Hagadone got a groundout to end the game, earning his second save. Reliever Elliott Cribby (1-1) got the win.
With the score tied at 2-2 in the eighth, the Huskies got a leadoff single from Matt Hague. Clem then reached on a fielder's choice as Hague was forced at second and Curt Rindal singled on a hit-and-run liner through the right side.
After a pop to second base for the second out, Husky junior Matt Lane came on to pinch hit and poked a single to left, sending home Clem with the go-ahead run. Catcher Joey Dunn followed with a single to left that drove in Rindal, staking the Dawgs with a 4-2 lead.
However, UTA came back in the bottom of the eighth. After a leadoff single, UW closer came on in relief of freshman Nick Haughian, who'd retired the last two Mavericks in the seventh. Cribby hit a batter then walked another to load the bases with no outs.
Cribby had a chance to wiggle off the hook when a flyout to shallow left and a popout to the catcher led to the first two outs. However, a bases-loaded walk to Kyle Thomason and a two-run single up the middle from pinch hitter Danny Slinkman put the Mavericks in front, 5-4.
In the ninth, the Huskies were down to their final strike when Rindal belted an 0-2 pitch to right to drive in Bradley Boyer, who walked to open the ninth. Rife, a freshman from Lakewood High, then came off the bench in place of freshman DH Kyle Conley and laced a single up the middle to score Matt Hague with the go-ahead run.
After neither team managed a hit through the first two innings, the Huskies got started in the third. With one out, center fielder Michael Burgher reached on a single. Ryan Anderson followed with a hit-and-run single through the right side and then stole second to put runners at second and third. Matt Hague then came through with a line-drive single to right field, plating both runners to give the UW a 2-0 lead.
UW starter Kyle Parker kept the Mavericks off of the scoreboard until the sixth inning. A walk and a double put runners at second and third with one out for UTA. A wild pitch allowed David McLeod to score the first run and a groundout to second from Ben Burum sent Adam Moore across the plate to tie the game at 2-2.
Friday, the Huskies will take on either Arkansas or Texas-Arlington in a 4:30 p.m. (PST) game. A live audio broadcast of the game will air on gohuskies.com. The UW's opponent will be determined after the conclusion of Thursday night's Arkansas-Hawaii game.
