SEATTLE - For the second straight day, Cal Poly's Jimmy Van Ostrand hit two home runs, belting a pair of three-run shots, as the Mustangs handed the 19th-ranked Washington baseball team an 18-3 loss Sunday at Husky Ballpark.
The loss marks the first time this season that the Huskies (15-7) have lost two consecutive games. Cal Poly improved to 15-8 on the year.
Van Ostrand finished the day 2-for-3 with two runs, two walks and six runs batted in. Poly starter Bud Norris (5-1) picked up the victory, working seven innings, allowing three runs on seven hits.
Van Ostrand, who drove in four of the Mustangs' five runs with two homers Saturday, picked up where he left off as he belted a three-run homer to center in the first inning to stake the visitors with a 3-0 lead. Later in the top of the first, shortstop Brent Morel added to that lead with a two-run homer, making it 5-0 after half an inning.
Washington answered in with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second. After Curt Rindal reached on an infield single, UW third baseman Matt Stevens lofted his ninth home run of the season into the left-field bullpen to cut the lead to 5-2.
After failing to notch a base hit since the first, Cal Poly got back on the scoreboard in the sixth when second baseman Brent Walker's two-out, bases-loaded single drove in a pair of runs. A single from Grant Desme drove in another, increasing the Mustangs' advantage to 8-2.
In the bottom of the sixth, Husky senior Zach Clem's seventh homer of the season, a line- drive to left with no runners on, made it an 8-3 Cal Poly lead.
In the seventh, Van Ostrand's second three-run homer of the day, which he sliced the opposite way just inside the right-field foul pole, highlighted a six-run inning that upped the lead to 14-3. In the eighth, a three-run homer from Josh Lansford was the big blow in a four-run inning that capped the Mustangs' offense for the day.
UW freshman starter Tyler Cheney (1-2) took the loss, allowing six runs on four hits over five and two-thirds innings.
Game three is set for a noon first pitch Monday. Live audio and stats will be available at gohuskies.com. Wednesday, in a game added to the schedule last week, the Huskies will host Puget Sound in a 6:00 p.m. game before traveling to Berkeley to face Cal in the first Pac-10 Conference series of the year next weekend.
