SEATTLE - After a game-tying grand slam from Andy Lentz in the eighth inning, the Washington baseball team got a game-winning, bases-loaded single in the 10th from first baseman Curt Rindal as the Huskies avoided a series sweep with a 9-8 win over Cal Poly Monday at Husky Ballpark.
In the 10th, the UW loaded the bases on a walk and two singles before Rindal, a junior from Mt. Vernon, singled to left with two outs to drive in Ryan Anderson with the winning run. The win improved the Huskies' record to 16-7 while Cal Poly dropped to 15-9
Down 8-4 in the eighth, the Huskies loaded the bases on a single and a pair of walks for center fielder Lentz, who drove a two-out, full-count pitch from Cal Poly closer Rocky Roquet into the visitors' bullpen in left field to tie the game at 8-8.
Husky closer Elliott Cribby (3-1) worked two and one-third scoreless innings for the win. Cal Poly closer Rocky Roquet (1-1), who surrendered the grand slam and gave up the leadoff single to Anderson in the 10th, took the loss.
Cal Poly scored a run in the first when Brent Walker led off with a walk, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and then scored on an errant throw from catcher Matt Lane.
However, the Huskies answered back in the top of the first. With two outs and Matt Hague aboard on a single, Lane atoned for his earlier error with his fifth home run of the season, a line drive to right, to put the Huskies on top, 2-1.
In the second, the Huskies tacked on two more when Zach Clem singled and freshman DH Kyle Conley followed with his fourth home run of the season. In the third, Cal Poly cut the lead to 4-3 on RBI singles from Jimmy Van Otrand and Josh Lansford.
In the top of the fourth, Cal Poly scored a run to tie the game at 4-4. Jimmy Gardiner reached on a third-strike wild pitch and eventually came around to score from third on a groundout from Brent Walker.
In the fifth, the Mustangs went back on top, 5-4, thanks to an RBI single from catcher Matt Canepa. In the eighth, after a pair of infield singles put two aboard, Cal Poly center fielder Grant Desme homered to right-center field, increasing the lead to 8-4.
Wednesday, in a game added to the schedule last week, the Huskies will host Puget Sound in a 6:00 p.m. game before traveling to Berkeley to face Cal in the first Pac-10 Conference series of the year next weekend. Live audio of the UPS game will be available at gohuskies.com while the three games from Cal will air live on radio on KKNW AM-1150.
