SEATTLE - Cal Poly first baseman Jimmy Van Ostrand hit two home runs, including one in the eighth that broke a 4-4 tie, as the Mustangs beat the 19th-ranked Washington baseball team, 5-4, Saturday at Husky Ballpark in the first of a three-game series.
Husky ace Tim Lincecum (4-2) suffered the loss despite allowing only one earned run. He worked eight innings, allowing five runs total on only three hits and five walks while striking out nine. Washington fell to 15-6 with the loss.
Van Ostrand, who earlier had hit a three-run homer in the third to get the Mustangs back in the game, belted his second of the game and eighth of the year off of Lincecum with one out and none on in the eighth. His two homers accounted for two of the Mustangs' three hits on the day.
Cal Poly reliever Casey Fien (2-0), who entered the game in the seventh and worked three innings of one-hit relief, picked up the win. Starter Gary Daley, who beat the Huskies with a one-hit shutout last season in San Luis Obispo, allowed four runs on six hits over six innings.
Washington took a 3-0 lead with three runs in the first. Andy Lentz doubled to lead off and then scored on a single from Matt Hague. Catcher Matt Lane followed with his fourth home run of the year, driving a ball to left-center.
In the second, Hague made it 4-0 when he singled to drive in shortstop Danny Cox, who had been hit by a pitch and stolen second.
Cal Poly took advantage of a two-out error in the third to get back in the game. After Scott Walker reached on a throwing error from Lentz, the UW second baseman, Grant Desme walked. First baseman Jimmy Van Ostrand then belted a homer to straightaway center to cut the Husky lead to 4-3.
In the fifth, the Mustangs scored another unearned run on a Desme sacrifice fly, tying the score at 4-4.
Game two of the series gets underway Sunday at 2:00 p.m. and game three is set for a noon first pitch Monday. Live audio and stats for both games will be available at gohuskies.com.
