SEATTLE - Freshmen Bradley Boyer and Danny Cox had three hits apiece as the Washington baseball team out-slugged Santa Clara for an 14-10 win Friday at Husky Ballpark.
The game, the first of a three-game series, featured a one-hour, 31-minute delay prior to the top of the fifth inning, brought about by lightning, rain and, for a while, ice pellets. The win improved the UW's record to 13-5 on the year while the Broncos fell to 10-8.
The two teams traded runs in the early innings. In the bottom of the first, the UW went on top with three runs. Boyer led off with a double and scored on a single from Brett Kaluza. After a double-play groundout eventually sent Kaluza home, the Dawgs capped the scoring on an RBI single from Kyle Conley.
However, in the top of the second, the Broncos tied with three of their own. Matt Long tripled down the right-field line to drive in two and then scored on a groundout.
In the bottom of the second, the Huskies were at it again as Boyer once again led off with a double and scored on a single from Kaluza. Matt Hague drove in Kaluza and the Huskies went on to score five in the inning thanks to a two-run single from Matt Stevens and an RBI single from Danny Cox, giving the UW an 8-3 lead.
Santa Clara third baseman Dustin Realini led off the top of the third with his second home of the year. However, the UW stretched the lead back out in the fourth, scoring three to increase the lead to 11-4 before the rain delay.
After the game got back underway, Santa Clara scored the game's next runs on two-run homers from Gabe Alcantar (in the sixth) and Eric Newton (in the seventh), cutting the Huskies' lead to 11-8.
In the eighth, Boyer drew a bases-loaded walk and pinch hitter Jake Rife drove in two with a single to cap the Huskies' scoring. In the top of the ninth, Newton, the Broncos' second baseman, hit his second two-run homer of the game.
Junior Kyle Parker started, but didn't figure in the decision as he didn't return for the top of the fifth inning after the long rain delay. He gave up four runs on five hits over four innings. Freshman reliever Nick Haughian (1-1) picked up the win with three innings of relief. Sophomore Elliott Cribby entered the game with one out and two on in the ninth to pick up his sixth save.
Santa Clara starter Sean O'Neill (1-2) took the loss, allowing 11 runs on 13 hits over three and two-thirds innings.
Boyer finished the game 3-for-5 with two doubles, two runs and two driven in while Cox was 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI. Stevens drove in three runs to lead the Huskies in that category.
The series continues with a 2:00 p.m. game Saturday and a 1:00 p.m. game Sunday. A live audio broadcast and live stats for both games will be available at gohuskies.com.
