SEATTLE - Freshman Kyle Conley's second home run of the game, a two-out, two-run shot in the seventh, broke a 5-5 tie as the Washington baseball team came from behind to beat Gonzaga, 7-5, Sunday at Husky Ballpark to complete a three-game sweep.
Conley, the Huskies' right fielder from Richland, hit a solo homer in the second as well and hit three home runs on the weekend. He finished Sunday's game 2-for-4 with three RBI. Washington improved to 8-2 with the victory while the Zags dropped to 7-6.
Gonzaga second baseman Scott Campbell, who went 4-for-5 with a homer and two doubles, opened the game with a solo homer in the first to give Gonzaga its first lead of the day. In the bottom of the second, Conley's first homer tied it at 1-1.
The Zags went back on top with three runs in the fourth. After a single and a walk, freshman DH Ryan Wiegand hit his first career homer, putting Gonzaga on top, 4-1.
Gonzaga tacked on a fifth run in the sixth. With runners aboard at first and second, Zach Woodward's sharp grounder was snagged by diving UW first baseman Curt Rindal. However, Rindal's throw to first was dropped by pitcher Matt Kasser covering the bag and Darin Holcomb scored.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Huskies cut the lead to 5-3 with a pair of runs that came across on bases-loaded walks to catcher Joey Dunn and pinch hitter Brett Kaluza.
The following inning, the UW tied the game as Bradley Boyer greeted GU reliever Nate Williams with a leadoff double and eventually scored on a Matt Hague sacrifice fly. Zach Clem then walked and, after moving to third on a stolen base and a wild pitch, he scored on a double from Rindal. Conley then followed with his second homer of the day to give the Huskies their first lead in the game.
Husky senior Matt Kasser (1-0), who allowed just one unearned run in three innings of relief, picked up the win. Sophomore lefty Nick Hagadone retired the Bulldogs in order in the final two innings for the save. Williams (2-1) took the loss for Gonzaga.
Monday morning, the Huskies depart for Hawaii for a six-game, five-day road trip that begins a stretch of 11 games in 13 days. Live audio broadcasts of all games from Hawaii will air on gohuskies.com, beginning with Tuesday's 4:30 p.m. (PST) game against No. 17 Arkansas.
