HONOLULU - The Washington baseball team handed 11th-ranked Arkansas its first loss of the season Tuesday, scoring four runs in the first and hanging on for a 5-2 win in the first game of the Rainbow Baseball Tournament at Les Murikami Stadium.
Junior Tim Lincecum (3-0) earned the win with a seven-inning start, his longest outing of the season. He allowed two runs on four hits while walking five and striking out eight.
Washington improved to 9-2 on the season while the Razorbacks fell to 9-1.
The Huskies got off to a quick start, scoring four runs in the first inning off of Arkansas starter Chris Rhoads, who entered the game with a 3-0 record and a 0.59 earned run average. After a strikeout to open the game, the Huskies loaded the bases when Andy Lentz and Matt Hague singled and Zach Clem was hit by a pitch.
After a single from Matt Lane scored one, a wild pitch allowed Hague to come across with the second run. A groundout from Curt Rindal drove in the third and an RBI single from Matt Stevens made it 4-0 and knocked Rhoads out of the game.
In the third, Matt Hague singled and stole second to lead off the inning. After two outs, Rindal hit a ground ball to third. Third baseman Blake Parker's throw to first, however, got past first baseman Danny Hamblin and up the right-field line, allowing Hague to score to make it a 5-0 Husky lead.
Arkansas finally broke through with two runs in the sixth inning. With two outs and nobody on base, James Ewing and Jake Dugger drew back-to-back walks. Hamblin followed with a double to the left-field corner, scoring both runners to cut the Husky edge to 5-2.
In the seventh, with two outs and nobody on, Lincecum loaded the bases on two walks and a hit batter. However, this time he struck out James Ewing to end the threat. UW reliever Nick Hagadone worked a perfect eighth inning before walking the leadoff hitter in the ninth. Elliott Cribby then came on and got a popout and a double-play groundout to end the game and record his fifth save.
Rhoads (3-1) took the loss for the Razorbacks. Relievers Trey Holloway and Lee Land combined to hold the UW to only one unearned run over the final seven and one-third innings.
Wednesday, the Huskies take on Hawaii Pacific in a non-tournament game. First pitch for that game is at 11:00 a.m. HST (1:00 p.m. PST). Later Wednesday, the Dawgs take on Hawaii at 7:00 p.m. HST (9:00 p.m. PST). NOTE: The 7:00 p.m. start is a new time as, due to Tuesday's rainout of Hawaii's game vs. Texas-Arlington, Wednesday's schedule has been revised.Live audio broadcasts of both games will air on the internet at gohuskies.com.
