SEATTLE - Sophomore center fielder Andy Lentz hit two home runs and a double as the Washington baseball team built a 6-0 lead and then held on to beat Gonzaga, 8-6, Saturday at Husky Ballpark.
The UW (7-2) took a two-games-to-none advantage in the three-game series. Gonzaga fell to 7-5 on the season.
Lentz, from Woodinville, went 3-for-4 with four runs, a walk and two runs batted in. The Huskies also got three hits from right fielder Matt Hague.
Husky junior Kyle Parker (2-0) picked up the win, allowing five runs on six hits over five and two-thirds innings. He walked two and struck out seven. Bulldogs starter Clayton Mortensen (2-2) took the loss, allowing seven runs over four innings. UW closer Elliott Cribby picked up his fourth save, working the final two and one-third innings.
The UW opened the scoring with three in the first. With two outs and the bases loaded on two walks and a single, Husky first baseman Curt Rindal reached a on hard ground ball that hit the third base umpire, good for an RBI single. A bases-loaded walk to Matt Stevens and a balk led to two more to give the Huskies a 3-0 lead.
In the second inning, with two outs and nobody on base, Lentz belted his second homer of the year to straightaway center field. Hague followed with a single and then Zach Clem made it 6-0 with his sixth home run of the season, a towering shot to left-center.
Gonzaga entered the fourth with only one hit, a first-inning double from Darin Holcomb. However, with two aboard on walks, shortstop Aaron McGuinness cut the UW lead in half when he hit his third home run of the season into the visitors' bullpen in left.
Washington got a seventh run in the fourth when Lentz doubled and scored on a Hague single.
The Zags came back in the sixth when Bobby Carlson led off with his fourth homer of the year. Later in the inning, Scott Campbell singled to drive in Shawn Wayt, cutting the Husky advantage to 7-5. Gonzaga got closer still with a run in the seventh when Holcomb doubled and eventually scored on a single from Carlson.
The Bulldogs threatened to tie in the eighth, getting two runners aboard with one out, but a double play ended the inning. In the bottom of the eighth, Lentz hit his second homer of the game to increase the Husky lead to 8-6.
The Huskies and Bulldogs finish the series Sunday at 1:00 p.m. A live audio broadcast of the game will be available at gohuskies.com.
