Huskies Finish Sweep In Pullman With 14-2 Win

PULLMAN, Wash. - Zach Clem went 4-for-4 with a homer and four runs batted in, Curt Rindal hit two homers and drove in four runs and freshman Brandon McKerney threw seven solid innings in his second career start as the Washington baseball team completed a three-game series sweep, beating Washington State, 14-2, Sunday at Bailey- Brayton Field.
The Huskies (27-17 overall, 7-8 in the Pac-10) finished the weekend sweep having scored 44 runs on 56 hits, including 11 doubles and eight home runs. Washington State remained winless in conference play, falling to 18-27 overall and 0-15 in the Pac-10.
McKerney, a right-hander from Meadowdale High, improved to 3-0 on the season after making his first-ever start in a conference game. He allowed two runs on seven hits, walking none and striking out three in his seven innings of work.
Clem, a junior from Burlington, Wash., went 6-for-11 with two homers and eight RBI over the weekend while Rindal, a redshirt sophomore from Mt. Vernon, went 3-for-4 Sunday and completed the series having gone 8-for-15 with two doubles, three homers and 12 runs batted in.
Washington drew first blood in the second inning when Rindal led off with his fourth homer of the season. WSU answered back in the bottom of the inning, tying the score at 1-1 when Jason Freeman singled and eventually scored on a single from Jeff Miller.
In the third, the Huskies had runners at first and second with one out and Matt Hague at the plate. Hague bounced a ball to third and, after one out was recorded at second, second baseman Jeff Miller's throw to first to complete a double play sailed into the Husky dugout, allowing Taylor Johnson to score the go-ahead run.
In the fourth, WSU catcher Brady Everett hit the first pitch of the inning out to left, tying the game at 2-2 with his team-leading 10th home run of the season.
Washington finally broke the game open in the fifth inning. After singles from Brent Lillibridge and Johnson, Clem smashed a long home run to left to break the 2-2 tie. Clem's eighth homer of the year gave him the team lead in that category. Washington went on to scored its sixth run later in the fifth as Kyle Larsen followed the homer with a single and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly from Rindal.
The UW tacked on a seventh run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly from Clem. In the eighth, an RBI double from freshman catcher Joey Dunn drove in a run and senior second baseman Mike Rundle plated two more with a single, increasing the Husky lead to 10-2.
In the eighth, Rindal belted his second homer of the day with Clem aboard to make it 12- 2. In the ninth, the Huskies capped the scoring when junior Cory Rickard belted a two- run, pinch-hit homer.
Aside from the four hits from Clem and three from Rindal, the UW also got three from Lillibridge, three from Dunn and two each from Johnson and Kyle Larsen.
WSU starter Wayne Daman (5-4) took the loss, allowing six runs (five earned) on 11 hits over four-plus innings.
With next weeknd off, the Huskies' next action won't come until Tuesday, May 10, when they play at Portland. A home series against Pac-10 rival Oregon State follows May 13- 15 at Husky Ballpark.
