RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Husky starter Tim Lincecum threw seven scoreless innings as the Washington baseball team opened a non-conference series with a 9-0 win over UC Riverside Friday night at the Riverside Sports Complex.
Lincecum (5-4), a sophomore from Renton's Liberty High, allowed only four hits. He walked seven Highlanders, but also struck out seven. Freshman Brandon McKerney worked the final two innings, facing the minimum, to complete the shutout.
Washington improved to 20-12 on the season with the win. The Huskies have won 15 of their last 21 games. The Highlanders fell to 13-16.
After going down in order in the first two innings, the Huskies broke through with two runs on three hits in the third. With two outs and Nick Batkoski aboard at second base, Taylor Johnson singled up the middle to open the scoring. Brent Lillibridge followed with a long double to left-center and the UW had a 2-0 lead in the third.
The Husky hitters contined to roll in the fourth. With one down, Matt Hague singled and scored all the way from first base on a double from Matt Lane. Lane came around on a Batkoski double and Batkoski made it 5-0 later in the inning when Johnson singled to send him home.
The Highlanders had several opportunities to score. Their best chance in the early-going came in the second when they loaded the bases with one out. Brett Bigler hit a fly ball to shallow center. After catching the flyout, UW center fielder Michael Burgher threw out Kyle Barratt, trying to score from third, at the plate to end the inning.
In the seventh, Lincecum walked two UCR batters on eight straight balls to begin the inning, but ended up getting off the hook once again with three straight outs. In all, 12 Highlanders reached base against Lincecum in his seven innings.
The Huskies scored their sixth run of the game in the eighth when pinch runner Mike Rundle scored on a passed ball. In the ninth, a sacrifice fly and two bases-loaded walks gave the UW three more.
Hague, Batkoski and Lane all finished the game with two hits, including a double apiece. Johnson also went 2-for-4 with two walks, two RBI, a run and a stolen base.
The Huskies and Highlanders will play game two of the series Saturday at 6:00 p.m. The game will air on tape delay on KKNW AM-1150 immediately following the Seattle Thunderbirds playoff hockey game. The live baseball broadcast will be available, however, on the internet via gohuskies.com.
