RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Zach Clem went 3-for-4 with three doubles and five runs batted in while Brent Lillibridge hit a grand slam and fell a double short of hitting for the cycle as the Washington baseball team cruised to a 19-3 win over UC Riverside Saturday evening in the second game of a three-game non-conference series.
The Huskies, winners of 17 of their last 22 games, improved to 21-12 on the season, having shut out the Highlanders, 9-0, on Friday. UCR fell to 13-17.
The Huskies handed UCR's top pitcher, Haley Winter, the loss. Winter (4-5) entered the game having allowed only nine earned runs in 54 innings, good for a 1.50 earned run average. Against the UW, however, he allowed nine earned runs on eight hits in only two-plus innings of work.
Husky starter Kyle Parker (5-4), threw six innings for the win, allowing three runs (two earned) on eight hits and no walks.
Clem, a junior from Burlington, Wash., doubled in three straight at bats in the third, fourth and fifth innings. Washington scored six in the second and five in both the third and fourth innings.
Lillibridge hit his grand slam in the Huskies' six run second. Washington had just taken a 3-2 lead on a bases-loaded walk before Lillibridge belted a long homer to left. The homer was his seventh of the season and 31st in his career, moving him into third on the all-time Husky homer list.
Washington also got four hits each from freshman designated hitter Matt Hague (two doubles, two singles) and junior right fielder Cory Rickard (three singles and a triple).
The Huskies scored a run in the first when Lillibridge tripled off the wall in center field and then scored on a groundout from Clem.
Riverside responded quickly, scoring two with two outs in the bottom of the first. Brett Bigler doubled to lead off, but was still at second with two outs. Aaron Grant singled to score Bigler and then stole second. Matt Cunningham followed with a ground ball deep in the hole between first and second. He beat out a single, but the throw from second baseman Mike Rundle was errant and Grant came in to give UCR a 2-1 lead.
But Washington wasted no time retaking the lead. With two on, Nick Batkoski singled to drive in a run. The Huskies then loaded the bases and a run scored on a walk to Johnson. Lillibridge followed with the grand slam.
In the third, the UW tacked on five more to extend their lead to 12-2. Batkoski singled home one run before second baseman Mike Rundle plated two more with a double down the left-field line. After Lillibridge walked, Clem belted a double to deep left-center to send home two runs.
Five more runs came across in the Huskies' fourth inning. Two-run doubles from Johnson and Clem accounted for most of the damage.
The Huskies and Highlanders close out the three-game series Sunday at 1:00 p.m. The game will air live on KKNW AM-1150 and also over the internet via gohuskies.com.
