Washington Uses Longball In 13-5 Win At WSU

PULLMAN, Wash. - Curt Rindal, Mike Rundle and Zach Clem each hit two-run home runs in the second inning, giving the Washington baseball team an early 6-0 lead as the Huskies cruised to a 13-5 win over Washington State in the second game of a Pac-10 series Saturday at Bailey-Brayton Field.
The win upped the Huskies' record to 26-17 overall and 6-8 in Pac-10 play while the Cougars, who were beaten 17-5 in Friday's series opener, fell to 18-26 on the season and 0-14 in conference.
Rindal, who drove in five runs in Friday's victory, went 2-for-5 with three RBI Saturday. Washington also got two hits and three RBI from freshman Matt Hague.
Husky sophomore Kyle Parker (7-5) threw six innings for the victory. He allowed four runs on six hits while striking out six. Cougar starter Jimmy Freeman (6-5) suffered his fifth straight loss after opening the season with six wins. The senior lefty allowed nine runs on eight hits over three and two-thirds innings.
In the Huskies' six-run second, Nick Batkoski was hit by a pitch to begin the inning. After an out, Rindal drove his third homer of the year out to left field to open the scoring. Catcher Joey Dunn was hit by the next pitch before Rundle belted his second round- tripper of the season. After Brent Lillibridge singled, Clem drove his seventh home run to stake the Huskies to a 6-0 lead.
Washington's bats got hot again in the fourth. With two down and none on, Lillibridge popped a ball that WSU right fielder Kaeo Rubin lost in the sun, allowing it to drop for a double. Taylor Johnson followed with a double off the center field wall to send home Lillibridge. After a walk, RBI singles from Hague and Batkoski scored two more, increasing the UW lead to 9-0.
The Cougars scored their first runs in the fifth. Jim Murphy, who opened the inning with a single, scored from third on an errant pickoff attempt at second base before Scott Suttmeier drove in Garret Kimbrel with a two-out single, cutting the Husky advantage to 9-2.
In the sixth, Hague picked up his second and third RBI of the game with a two-run double before Rindal drove in his third run with a two-out single, making the score 12-2.
WSU got two runs back in the sixth on a single from Jeff Miller and a bases-loaded walk to Rubin. In the top of the seventh, Rundle tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly from Johnson. Rundle finished the game 2-for-4 with a homer, a triple and two RBI.
The series concludes Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. The game will air live in the Seattle area on KKNW AM-1150.
