Huskies Rally To Beat WSU, 17-5

PULLMAN, Wash. - Freshman Matt Hague went 3-for-5 with a two-run homer and sophmore Curt Rindal went 3-for-6 with five runs batted as the Washington baseball team overcame two early deficits to beat Washington State, 17-5, Friday night at Bailey- Brayton Field in the first game of a three-game Pac-10 series.
Washington (25-17 overall, 5-8 in the Pac-10) trailed 4-0 after three innings and 5-4 after four, but pulled away late to keep Washington State (18-25, 0-13) winless in Pac-10 play.
The Huskies overcame an unusually rough outing from ace Tim Lincecum. He entered the game having allowed only four earned runs over his last four starts, a total of 31 and a third innings. Friday night, however, he gave up five earned runs in only four innings, walking a career-high 10 batters. He gave up three hits, all singles, and struck out four, but also threw two wild pitched and balked once.
Senior reliever David Dowling (6-0) came on to open the fifth with the UW trailing 5-4 and threw five innings of no-hit relief. Dowling, a lefty from Juanita High School, faced only one over the minimum, walking one and striking out four to earn the victory.
Hague, the Huskies' right fielder from Kentwood High, improved his batting average to .435 with this three hits. His two-run homer in the seventh was his seventh of the season, moving him into a tie for the team lead despite the fact that he's started only 15 of the Huskies' 42 games. He also scored three runs in the game, including the runs that tied it at 4-4 and 5-5.
Washington State jumped to a 1-0 lead with a run in the first. Lincecum walked the first three Cougar batters in the first and Kaeo Rubin scored from third on a groundout from catcher Brady Everett. Lincecum, however, struck out the next two Cougars to end the inning without any further damage.
In the second, WSU added another run when freshman third baseman Scott Suttmeier poked a two-out RBI single to left, scoring Garrett Kimbrel to give the Cougars a 2-0 edge.
Lincecum's control troubles continued in the third. With two outs and nobody on, Lincecum loaded the bases on two walks and a single. He then walked Matthew Thomas to force in a run and, with Rubin at the plate, another run came in on a balk, increasing the WSU lead to 4-0.
Washington, however, got all four runs back in the fourth as six of the first seven Huskies in the inning singled. The first run scored on a single from Zach Clem before another from Rindal, the Husky DH from Mt. Vernon, drove in the second. Senior third baseman Nick Batkoski capped the rally with a two-run single to tie the game at 4-4.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Cougars took advantage of Lincecum's wildness once again as Suttmeier walked to lead off the inning and eventually came in from third on a wild pitch to put WSU back on top, 5-4.
In the top of of the sixth, the Huskies rallied once again, this time taking the lead with a two runs. Hague singled to lead off and then scored all the way from first when Rindal drove a double to the left-field corner. After a groundout moved Rindal to third, catcher Joey Dunn poked a single through a drawn-in WSU infield to give Washington a 6-5 lead.
Washington added two more in the eighth on a two-run double from Taylor Johnson, who went 3-for-6 with three RBI in the game. In the ninth, Washington scored more, including two on bases-loaded walks and three on a bases-loaded double from Rindal, to cap the scoring.
Cougar reliever Brett Sommer, who was responsible for the UW's two runs in the fifth, took the loss to fall to 0-1 on the season.
The Huskies and Cougars go at it again Saturday and Sunday, both at 1:00 p.m. Radio broadcasts of both games will air live on KKNW AM-1150.
