SEATTLE - After falling behind twice early in the game, the Washington baseball rallied in the middle innings to pick up a 6-3 win over the University of British Columbia in an exhibition game Tuesday night at Husky Ballpark.
While the game didn't count on the Huskies' season record, it was a regular-season game for the Thunderbirds, who play in the NAIA against all American opponents. UBC fell to 25-14-1 with the loss.
Husky freshman Nick Hagadone, a lefty from Sumner, threw three scoreless innings of relief to earn the win. He allowed two hits, struck out two and didn't walk a batter. Matt Hague, who started in right field and went 3-for-4 at the plate, pitched the ninth inning to earn a save.
UBC reliever Matt Miller (4-3), who surrendered three runs in the fifth, took the loss. He was one of seven Thunderbirds pitchers to appear in the game.
UBC took a quick lead with a run in the first when Mark Capone walked and eventually came in to score from third on an errant pickoff attempt at second base. In the bottom of the first, the UW tied the game at 1-1 when Brent Lillibridge doubled and eventually scored on a groundout.
In the bottom of the second, Hague singled and scored on a single from catcher D.J. Neyens. Washington nearly added more when Lillibridge's long blast to left field was caught at the fence by a leaping Adam Campbell.
In the third, UBC went back in front with a pair of runs. Campbell, who capped the previous inning with the spectacular catch, walked and stole second to open the inning. He scored on a single from Steve Bell-Irving, who eventually crossed the plate on a groundout to put the Thunderbirds a 3-2 edge.
Husky first baseman Curt Rindal led off the fourth with a homer to left to tie the game at 3-3.
Washington got back on top in the bottom of the fifth with three runs. Cory Rickard, who entered the game in the fourth, walked, stole second and scored on a single from Kyle Larsen. Nick Burnham, making his first appearance in more than a month after knee surgery, ran for Larsen and scored on a sacrifice fly from Rindal. An RBI single from Mike Rundle capped the three-run fifth.
This weekend, Washington travels to Washington State for a three-game series with the Cougars. Friday, game time is 6:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, first pitch is 1:00 p.m. All three games will air live on KKNW AM-1150.
