Stanford Completes Sweep With 6-3 Win

STANFORD, Calif. - Washington fought back from a 4-0 deficit to draw within a run, but couldn't complete the comeback as the 24th-ranked Stanford baseball team finished a three-game series sweep with a 6-3 win over the Huskies Sunday at Sunken Diamond.
Stanford, which won 2-1 on Friday and 10-6 Saturday, improved to 24-14 on the season and 7-5 in conference play while the Huskies fell to 24-17 and 4-8 in the league.
Stanford got started in the second inning when catcher John Hester led off with his third home run of the season. The Cardinal went on to make it 2-0 later in the second when Michael Taylor, who walked, scored on a double from left fielder Chris Lewis.
The Cardinal tacked on another pair in the third. Taylor walked once again and came around on a double from shortstop Chris Minaker. Designated hitter Ben Summerhays followed with a single send Minaker home, increasing the lead to 4-0.
Washington got its first run in the top of the fourth when freshman right fielder Matt Hague belted a two-out solo shot, his sixth of the year.
The Huskies closed the gap to only one run with two in the seventh. With two on and one out, freshman second baseman Kiel Lillibridge drove in a run with an infield single. His brother, junior Brent Lillibridge, followed with a sacrifice fly that scored Nick Batkoski from third and the Cardinal lead was cut to 4-3.
Washington had a good opportunity in the eighth when Zach Clem and Kyle Larsen singled to open the inning. However, Stanford reliever Blake Holler got a strikeout, a flyout and a groundout to end the threat.
Stanford added two insurance runs in the eighth when Minaker, an Edmonds-Woodway High product, contributed to a two-out rally with an RBI single. Ben Summerhays followed with an RBI double to move the Cardinal lead out to 6-3. Minaker finishd the game 3-for-4 with two runs batted in while Hester was 2-for-4 with a homer and a double.
Sophomore starter Matt Leva (2-1) threw five and one-third innings to pick up the victory. He allowed one run on four hits. Blake Holler worked the final three and two- thirds innings to pick up his first save of the year.
UW junior starter Matt Kasser (3-4) went only one and one-third innings in the loss. Clem led the UW hitters, finishing 2-for-3.
The Huskies take on British Columbia in an exhibition game Tuesday night at Husky Ballpark before returning to the road for a three-game series at Washington State next weekend in Pullman.
