STANFORD, Calif. - The 24th-ranked Stanford baseball team stormed back from an early 2-0 deficit, scoring four runs each in the fourth and fifth innings to coast to a 10-6 win over Washington Saturday in the second game of a three-game Pac-10 series at Husky Ballpark.
The Huskies, who made a season-high five errors in the game, dropped to 24-16 on the season and 4-7 in Pac-10 play, having lost 2-1 to the Cardinal on Friday. Stanford improved to 23-14 and 6-5.
Washington opened the scoring, taking a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a two-out RBI single from freshman second baseman Kiel Lillibridge. In the third, junior left fielder Zach Clem launched a leadoff homer, his sixth of the season, to increase the Washington lead to 2-0.
Stanford took the lead in the fourth, scoring four runs. With two aboard, Edmonds- Woodway grad Chris Minaker singled to drive in the Cardinal's first run. Later in the inning, with two outs, center fielder Jim Rapoport tied the score with an RBI single. Adam Sorgi followed with a two-run double down the right-field line, giving the Cardinal a 4-2 advantage.
In the fifth, the Cardinal loaded the bases on a single, a walk and a bunt. Minaker followed with a double to drive home two runs, chasing Husky starter Kyle Parker from the game. After an infield single re-loaded the bases, a balk from UW freshman reliever Brandon McKerney sent home Stanford's seventh run. An RBI groundout from Rapoport send home the inning's fourth run and Stanford led, 8-2.
The argument that ensued from the balk call led to Husky head coach Ken Knutson being ejected by third base umpire David Rogers.
The Huskies scored their third run in the top of the sixth when Curt Rindal came home from third on a wild pitch, the Cardinal got it back in the bottom of the same inning as John Mayberry Jr. singled and eventually scored on a double-play groundout.
The UW plated two more in the seventh as Brent Lillibridge scored on an error and Taylor Johnson came in on an RBI groundout, cutting the Stanford lead to 9-5. However, in the seventh, Jed Lowrie reached on a Kyle Larsen error and scored on a double from Mayberry.
In the ninth, Johnson led off with a triple and then scored on Clem's third hit of the game, a single to left. Johnson's run was the first all season off of Cardinal reliever Matt Manship, who hadn't allowed a single run in 16 and two-thirds prior innings.
Parker (6-5) took the loss for the Huskies, allowing eight runs (seven earned) over four- plus innings. Stanford freshman Nolan Gallagher (1-3) picked up the win in relief and Manship earned his second save.
Mayberry led the Cardinal hitters with three hits in four at bats. Minaker went 2-for-5 with three RBI. Clem and Kiel Lillibridge each collected three hits for the Huskies.
The series concludes Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. The game will air live in the Seattle area on KKNW AM-1150.
