STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford's Jeff Gilmore held the Washington baseball team to a run on only four hits and out-dueled UW ace Tim Lincecum as the 24th-ranked Cardinal beat the Huskies, 2-1, in the first game of a three-game Pac-10 series Friday night at Sunken Diamond.
Gilmore (6-1) threw his first complete game of the season, walking none and striking out nine along the way. After surrendering the lone Husky run in the sixth, he retired the last 10 Husky hitters to close out the victory.
Lincecum (6-5) gave up only one earned run on four hits as the second run scored on an error. The sophomore from Liberty High walked two and struck out 11 in the loss, his second straight complete-game effort.
The Cardinal, who were swept in a conference series for the first time since 1997 last weekend at Arizona State, improved to 22-14 overall and 5-5 in Pac-10 play. Washington fell to 24-15 and 4-6 in the conference.
After neither team had managed to get a runner past second base through the first five innings, the Huskies finally broke through in the top of the sixth. With two outs and nobody on, Brent Lillibridge blooped a double to shallow center field. After stealing third, Lillibridge scored when Zach Clem laced a single through the left side, giving Washington a 1-0 edge.
Stanford, however, struck back quickly with two in the bottom of the sixth. After a leadoff single from Chris Lewis, Lincecum retired the next two batters before walking Jed Lowrie. Former Mariners' first-round draft pick John Mayberry, Jr. followed with a double to the gap in right-center. After Lewis had scored, the Huskies had Lowrie out at the plate, but the ball was jarred loose from UW catcher Joey Dunn's glove and Lowrie scored to give the Cardinal a 2-1 lead.
The series continues Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. The game, as well as Sunday's 1:00 p.m. series finale, will air live in the Seattle area on KKNW AM-1150.
