PORTLAND, Ore. - The Washington baseball team hit six home runs, including two from freshman Matt Hague, and rolled to a 15-7 win over Portland Tuesday at Joe Etzel Field.
The Huskies (24-14) got a grand slam and a solo homer from hot-hitting right fielder Hague, who also pitched a scoreless inning of relief. Hague, from Kentwood High, gave the UW a 4-3 lead with his grand slam and then led off the fourth with a solo shot. He finished the day 3-for-5 with five RBI, raising his average to .462 (24-for-53) with five homers and 18 RBI in 11 starts.
Earlier this year, the Huskies hit six homers in a game vs. UC Santa Barbara, tying the school record. Four days later, March 10, they broke that record with seven in a game against Pacific.
Portland (12-24) took a quick lead in the first. After a pair of one-out singles, first baseman Matthew Peters belted a three-run homer to center field, his seventh of the season, to give the Pilots a 3-0 lead.
However, in the second, with one down and the bases loaded, Hague pulled a pitch from Chris Siegfried out to left-center for a grand slam, his fourth home run of the season.
In the third, Husky designated hitter Curt Rindal belted a two-run homer to straightaway center field to increase the UW lead to 6-3.
Portland narrowed the lead to 6-5 with two in the bottom of the third. After Justin Pierce led off the inning with a home run, Jason Krohn singled and eventuanlly scored on an RBI groundout.
Washington scored four in the fourth to break the game open. After Hague led off with his second homer of the day, Washington scored one more on an RBI single from Rindal and two more on an error by UP shortstop Andrew Wrisley, giving the UW a 10-5 lead.
Kyle Larsen hit a solo homer to lead off the sixth inning and the Huskies got two-run homers from both Zach Clem and Taylor Johnson in the eighth to cap their scoring.
Portland's Jason Krohn hit a solo homer in the ninth for Portland for the Pilots' third round-tripper of the game.
Husky starter David Dowling (5-0) got the win, allowing six runs on eight hits over five and two-thirds innings. Siegfried (2-2) took the loss, giving up four runs on four hits over two innings.
Rindal finished the day 3-for-5 with three RBI while Brent Lillibridge, Clem, Larsen and Mike Rundle notched two hits each.
The Huskies travel to No. 24 Stanford this weekend for three games. All three will air live on KKNW AM-1150 in the Seattle area. Friday's game begins at 6:00 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday, game time is 1:00 p.m.
