SEATTLE - After the Washington baseball team scored two in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings, California scored one in the 11th on a two-out single from Mike Van Winden to beat the Huskies, 4-3, Sunday at Husky Ballpark in the final game of a three-game Pac-10 series.
The Bears (24-16 overall, 6-6 in the Pac-10), avoided the sweep with the win, having lost to the Huskies Friday and Saturday. Washington fell to 23-14 for the season and 4-5 in the conference.
In the 11th, Cal had James Holder at second and Kyle Spraker at first with two outs. Freshman first baseman Van Winden followed with a bloop single to left and Holder scored, narrowly beating the throw to the plate.
With one out in the bottom of the ninth, the Huskies, trailing 3-1, loaded the bases on a single and two walks. Freshman Andy Lentz followed with a bloop single to shallow left field, just over the glove of third baseman Matt Einspahr, driving in two runners to tie the score at 3-3.
Bears reliever Matt Swanson (5-0) picked up the victory after entering the game in the ninth after the Huskies had tied it. Husky closer Josh Conover (0-1) suffered the loss. The senior side-armer had retired all eight he'd faced before allowing the single to Holder to open the 11th.
Cal took its first lead of the weekend with a run in the second. Cleanup hitter Brennan Boesch was hit by a pitch to open the inning. After a Josh Satin single put runners at the corners with no outs, James Holder bounced into a double play that allowed Boesch to score, giving the Bears a 1-0 lead.
In the fourth, a bases-loaded sacrifice fly from Jeremy Burchett drove in Chris Errecart to increase the California lead to 2-0.
The UW notched its first run in the bottom of the fourth. Shortstop Brent Lillibridge led off with a double. After moving to third on a groundout to second base, he scored when Zach Clem grounded to short.
In the fifth, the Bears scored a third run on an RBI single from Matt Einspahr. Cal went on to load the bases with one out, chasing Husky starter Matt Kasser. Reliever Keaton Everitt came in and got Boesch, the Bears' top hitter, to ground into an inning-ending double play to end the threat.
The Huskies got a chance to get back into the game in the ninth. Three two-out singles loaded the bases and Clem lined a shot up the middle. However, the line drive was snagged by Bears closer Travis Talbott to end the inning.
Next up for the Huskies are four straight road games. Tuesday at 2:00 p.m., the Dawgs face Portland at Joe Etzel Stadium. Live audio for that game will be available at gohuskies.com. Friday through Sunday, the UW visits Stanford for a three-game series. All three of those games are scheduled to air live in the Seattle area on KKNW AM-1150.
