SEATTLE - Four Husky pitchers combined to allow one run on five hits and the Washington baseball team scored in five straight innings to beat St. Martin's, 10-1, in the UW home opener at Husky Ballpark.
Husky sophomore Kyle Parker (2-2) worked four perfect innings in a pre-determined, four-inning start to get the victory. He struck out five and allowed only one ball to leave the infield. Sophomore Jordan Ponzoha threw three innings of shutout relief followed by one scoreless frame from freshman Brandon McKerney.
Freshman Nick Hagadone, in his first career appearance, gave up the only St. Martin's run in the ninth on a leadoff homer from first baseman Chris Nordness.
After failing to score in the first two innings, the Huskies (5-7) broke through with four runs in the third to take a 4-0 lead. With one out, Taylor Johnson singled up the middle to start the rally. After a double from freshman Andy Lentz put runners at second and third, Brent Lillibridge blooped a single and Kyle Larsen flied out, each driving home a run to give the UW a 2-0 edge.
Junior Zach Clem followed with his first home run of the season, deep to center, driving in Lillibridge and doubling the Husky advantage.
In the fourth, with Nick Burnham aboard on a walk, Lentz lined a ball to center that went off the glove of center fielder Nathan Baker, dropping for a three-base error that allowed Burnham to score. After Lillibridge walked, Larsen lined a single past shortstop to drive in the UW's sixth run. A balk allowed Lillibridge to score from third and the Husky lead was 7-0.
St. Martin's (4-8) notched its first hit when Adam Siler bounced a single through the left side off of Ponzoha with one out in the fifth. Phillip Oullette singled later in the inning two put runners at the corners with two outs, but a fly out ended the Saints' first serious threat.
In the bottom of the fifth, the UW made it 8-0 when Curt Rindal singled and scored on a double from Nick Batkoski. In the sixth, catcher Matt Lane doubled home Clem to increase the lead to 9-0. In the seventh, freshman shortstop Kiel Lillibridge drove in a run with his first career hit, a single.
The only two UW hitters with more than one hit were Clem (2-for-4) and Larsen (2-for-3) as the Huskies used 19 different position players.
The Huskies continue their seven-game homestand this weekend with a three-game series against UC Santa Barbara. Friday night's game starts at 6:30 p.m. First pitch Saturday and Sunday is 1:00 p.m. Live audio and live stats will be available for all games at gohuskies.com.
