
Huskies Beat Cal Poly, 7-4, For Eighth Straight Win

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - The Washington baseball team overcame a 3-0 deficit to beat Cal Poly, 7-4, Friday in a the first game of a three-game, non-conference series at Baggett Stadium.
The win was the eighth in a row for the Huskies (12-7), who had taken more than a week off for final exams after having won seven straight home games. Cal Poly fell to 14-10.
Husky sophomore starter Tim Lincecum (4-2) earned his fourth straight victory with an eight-inning outing. The right-hander from Renton allowed three hits, four runs (two earned) and four walks while striking out nine.
Cal Poly lefty Garrett Olson (5-1) suffered his first loss of the season, allowing five runs on six hits over eight and one-third innings.
The Mustangs took a 3-0 lead with three in the fifth. With two outs, Bret Berglund scored on a single from Jimmy Gardiner, who then scored on UW shortstop Brent Lillibridge's first error of the season. Brent Walker, who reached on the error, eventually scored the third run on a single from Matt Cooper.
The Huskies got two runs back in the sixth. With Brent Lillibridge and Zach Clem aboard on a hit by pitch and a walk, Kyle Larsen singled to drive in one. Nick Batkoski followed with a sacrifice fly.
In the seventh, the UW scored two more to move in front. Lillibridge drove in both runs with a single, scoring Matt Lane and Nick Burnham.
The Mustangs tied it at 4-4 with a run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly from Josh Lansford, but the Huskies got an RBI single from Taylor Johnson, a sac fly from Clem and a balk that scored Johnson from third.
Johnson and Larsen each finished 2-for-5 to lead the Husky hitters. Senior David Dowling threw a scoreless ninth inning for his second save of the year.
The series continues Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. game and concludes Sunday at 11:00 a.m.
