SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Cal Poly starter Gary Daley threw a one-hit shutout to break the Washington baseball team's eight-game winning streak with a 6-0 victory Saturday at Baggett Stadium.
After play had already begun, a rain delay held things up for about an hour and a half, interrupting play with one out in the bottom of the first. Daley, who had loaded the bases in the top of the first on two walks and a hit batter, came out of the delay in a groove, retiring the first 13 batters he faced after play resumed.
Daley (3-0), a sophomore righthander from Grass Valley, Calif., finished having allowed only one hit over nine innings, walking two and striking out seven for the victory.
Husky freshman Andy Lentz broke up Daley's no-hit bid with a one-out single in the sixth.
Already ahead 1-0 on an RBI single from Jimmy Gardiner in the fifth, Cal Poly (15-10) added to its lead in the sixth when catcher Kyle Blumenthal drove in three runs with a bases-loaded double to increase the lead to 4-0.
In the eighth, a two-run single from Bret Berglund added two more runs to the Mustangs' total.
UW sophomore Kyle Parker (4-3) suffered the loss for the Huskies (12-8). Parker worked six innings, allowing six runs.
The Huskies and Mustangs will finish the three-game series Sunday with an 11:00 a.m. game.
