COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The No. 19 Washington baseball team split a pair of low-scoring games with the University of San Diego to close out the Dominos Pizza Aggie Baseball Classic. The UW won the first game, 4-1, behind a complete-game three-hitter from senior David Dowling. In the second, USD scored three runs with two out in the sixth to claim a 3-0 win, the Toreros' fourth shutout win in five tournament games.
The HUskies fell to 4-7 with the loss while San Diego improved to 12-8-1. USD gave up only four runs in five games, shutting out Evansville twice and the Huskies and Texas A&M once each.
Dowling (1-0), a lefty from Juanita High, threw his first career complete game in the opener, allowing a run on three hits while walking only one and striking out seven. It was the second straight complete game by a Husky pitcher.
USD entered game one not having allowed a single run in three previous games in the tournament. Senior Sean Warlop (0-1) took the loss in the opener, allowing three runs on four hits over five innings.
In game one, the Huskies took a lead with a pair of two-out runs in the second. Singles from Nick Batkoski and Nick Burnham drove in the two runs.
Dowling, in the meantime, had retired 14 batters in a row before giving up a two-out single to Keoni Ruth in the sixth. Steve Singleton followed with a double to score the Toreros' lone run in the game.
In the bottom of the sixth, Warlop walked Taylor Johnson to start the inning. He was replaced by lefty reliever Nicolas Cranmer, whose second pitch to Husky junior Brent Lillibridge was belted to left for a two-run homer, Lillibridge's first of the year.
Washington got an early break in game two. With runners at first and third with no outs, USC's Justin Snyder flied a ball deep to left for a would-be sacrifice fly. However, Gavin Ng, the runner at third was doubled up when the umpires decided Ng left third too early.
The UW never managed to get a runner to third base in game two while the Toreros had several chances to score before finally breaking the tie with two down in the sixth. With no one on and two outs, UW freshman Matt Hague gave up a double to Randy Curtis. After two walks (one of them intentional) loaded the bases, senior Josh Conover came on in relief of Hague.
Conover's first pitch to freshman pinch hitter Logan Gelbrich was flaired down the right-field line, dropping just fair to drive home all three runners.
USD reliever Matt Falk (1-0) worked the final one and one-third for the win. Freshman starter Matthew Couch held the UW scoreless in his five and two-thirds, but left with the score still tied at 0-0. Husky junior Keaton Everitt threw four shutout innings in the start, but Hague (0-1) suffered the loss.
Washington opens the home schedule and begins a stretch of seven straight home games Wednesday night as St. Martin's visits Husky Ballpark for a 6:30 p.m. game. Friday through Sunday, UC Santa Barbara travels to Seattle for a three-game series against the Huskies. Live audio and stats for all games will be available at gohuskies.com.
