SEATTLE - Junior forward Kim Taylor scored the game-winning goal in the first overtime Sunday, leading the Washington women to a 2-1 victory over 18th-ranked Ohio State and their third straight Husky/Nike Invitational championship at Husky Soccer Field. Taylor, who assisted on Tina Frimpong's game-winning goal in Friday's 2-1 win over No. 9 Penn State, was voted the Offensive Most Valuable Player of the tournament. She missed nearly the entire first half Sunday after being struck in the nose by a Buckeye player. Taylor returned to the lineup to start the second half and converted her only shot of the tournament eight minutes into overtime. Senior Clare Rustad was named the tournament's Defensive MVP for the Huskies (2-0) who were declared champions of the 10th-annual Husky/Nike Invitational as the lone undefeated team. UW entered the tournament as the only un-ranked team in the field that included No. 6 Portland, No. 9 Penn State and No. 18 Ohio State. "We just want to play the Washington way, which is to forget about the rankings and just play the game. I don't care what people are ranked," Coach Lesle Gallimore exclaimed. "It's about playing as a team and improving as well as obviously blending the young players with the old players, and that seems to be coming along well so far." Six of the 15 players who saw time for Washington were freshmen, including starters Dani Bridges, Dana Stirn and Whitney Clark. While the early contributions from newcomers was impressive, the scoring was done by upperclassmen. UW's four tournament goals were tallied by seniors Frimpong, Schweighart and Cassie Giles along with Taylor, a junior. Schweighart and Taylor each had assists during the weekend. Another senior, Nikki Gamble, was credited with an assist in both games. After a scoreless first half Sunday, the Huskies got on the board in the 54th-minute. Schweighart received a pass from Gamble and weaved through the box before finding the net with a 10-yard strike. The Buckeyes (0-2) recorded the equalizer with 1:01 left in regulation. Kathy Fulk's shot was deflected by UW goalkeeper Kelsey Rasmussen, but Danielle Dietrich collected the carom and hit the open goal from five yards out. Rasmussen continued her stellar play in goal for UW, registering eight saves for the second straight game. Buckeye goalkeeper Jen Heaney made two saves. The Huskies were outshot 19-6 in regulation play, but attempted the only two shots in overtime. The decisive shot was Taylor's golden goal at 98:11. With her back to the goal, she spun with the ball on the left side and launched a 35-yard blast into the upper right corner to immediately end the game. "I just wanted to take a shot because I hadn't taken a shot all tournament. I just knew that we deserved to win that game," Taylor said. " I was really tired and couldn't breathe, so I wanted to end the game in the first overtime and not get a tie in that game." Penn State (1-1) won Sunday's first game, defeating Portland (1-1) by a 2-1 tally. That was the Pilots' first loss in Husky Invitational play. Portland has competed in all 10 Nike tournaments, compiling an 18-1-1 record while winning the Invitational four times. The Nittany Lions scored in the second minute, a goal by Sophie Hiler that was assisted by Tiffany Weimer and Amanda Lentz. Penn State went ahead 2-0 when Carmelina Moscaco headed in a cross from Zoe Bouchelle at 12:52. Portland drew within 2-1 with 10 seconds remaining in the first half when Kari Evans headed in a Lindsey Huie corner kick from 10 yards away. Penn State held the Pilots scoreless in the second half to post the victory. Goalkeeper Erin McLeod made two saves for Nittany Lions who were outshot 14-9. Portland's Cori Alexander had four saves. Washington plays one more home game, Friday, Sept. 3 at 7 p.m. against No. 8 Tennessee, before embarking on a 10-game road trip. Following Friday's game, the Huskies don't play again at Husky Soccer Field until Oct. 15 against USC.
