SEATTLE - Senior Kelley Schweighart netted the game-winning goal 14 minutes into the second half Friday to lead the No. 15 Washington women to their third consecutive win over a ranked opponent, a 2-1 victory over No. 8 Tennessee at Husky Soccer Field.
The Huskies (3-0) defeated three straight ranked opponents for the first time ever. They opened the season at home last weekend with matching 2-1 victories over No. 8 Penn State and No. 18 Ohio State.
"I am just really proud of our team, because I think that it was really tough mentally to come out after last week," Washington coach Lesle Gallimore explained. "Look at what we did last week and now the team ranked eighth in the country is ready for us. Clearly, they were a quality opponent with so much speed, so much skill and so much talent. They were a very dangerous team on goal and I think that our team did a tremendous job of sticking to our game plan defensively."
Senior Tina Frimpong (Vancouver, Wash./Hudson's Bay HS) set up the decisive goal after receiving a throw-in from Kelli Smith (Santa Rosa, Calif.) on the right flank. Frimpong raced down the sideline and sent a pass into the center of the box, finding Schweighart (Solana Beach, Calif.) who lofted a 12-yard shot into the upper right corner at 59:02.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kelsey Rasmussen (Gig Harbor, Wash./Bellarmine Prep HS) registered two of her three saves in the second half, holding the Lady Vols (1-1) scoreless after halftime. Vanessa Phillips-Bosshart had five saves for Tennessee which was outshot by a slim 12-11 margin.
Senior Nikki Gamble (Oak Harbor, Wash./Oak Harbor HS) opened the scoring in the 13th minute for Washington. She collected a ball with her back to the goal, turned and looped a 20-yard shot into the upper right corner.
"I was happy today that we could score first and just keep battling and not ever put our heads down," said Gallimore. "We ran out the clock really well and made some smart decisions late in the game."
Tennessee scored the equalizer at 21:51 on a 17-yard blast by Jenny Jeffers that was assisted by Ali Christoph. The Lady Vols nearly took the lead just before halftime, but a 44th-minute goal off a corner kick was disallowed due to a hand-ball foul.
Washington also came close to adding a second first-half goal. Schweighart sent a corner kick to the middle of the box where Clare Rustad's (Saltspring Island, B.C.) header caromed off the crossbar. Another close UW chance came in the 63rd minute when Frimpong nearly tallied an insurance goal. The 2003 Pac-10 Player of the Year sprinted 20 yards down the left side toward the goal before launching a 15-yard shot that was saved by Phillips-Bosshart.
The Huskies now embark on a 10-game road trip and don't play again at home until USC visits Seattle on Oct. 15. UW travels to Oregon next weekend to compete in the Portland Invitational. The Huskies play UAB on Friday and Weber State on Sunday.
