UW Rallies To Beat UBC, 7-6, In Exhibition

SEATTLE - Washington scored four runs in the ninth to beat British Columbia, 7-6, in an exhibition game Wednesday night at Husky Ballpark.
While the game was a non-counting exhibition for the Huskies, it did count on UBC's record. The Thunderbirds, who play in the NAIA, fell to 26-20 with the loss.
The first five Huskies in the ninth reached, including one on an error. The Husies tied the game on an RBI single from freshman DH Tyler Mach and won it when sophomore shorstop Brian Bauer belted a double to center with one out to drive home Matt Lane.
UBC trailed 3-1 heading into the eighth before posting five runs, taking advantage of three errors by a cast of Husky reserves. Washington used 19 position players in the game. UBC right fielder Richard Smythe had the big hit, breaking a 3-3 tie with a two-run single.
Washington center fielder Brent Lillibridge led off the game with a home run and the Huskies didn't trail until the Thunderbirds posted their big eighth inning.
Washington tacked on a second run in the first when Greg Isaacson walked, moved to third on a wild pickoff throw and scored on a ground out. Another UBC error allowed Isaacson to score another unearned run in the third.
UBC used a different pitcher in each inning. Reliever Dan Osachoff (4-2), who began the ninth, suffered the loss. UW freshman Jordan Ponzoha worked a scoreless ninth to get the win. Husky freshman Richie Lentz started the game and threw four innings of no-hit ball, walking one and striking out three.
Thunderbirds designated hitter Connor Janes led off the fifth with a solo home run, his team's first hit and first run of the game.
This Friday through Sunday, Washington travels to Oregon State for a three-game, Pac-10 series in Corvallis. All three games will air live on KKNW AM-1150, starting at 5:00 p.m. Friday, 4:00 p.m. Saturday and 1:00 p.m. Sunday.
