Cal Rallies Past Washington, 9-4

BERKELEY, Calif. - California sophomore Adam Gold gave up three runs over the first two innings and then settled down as the Golden Bears scored nine straight runs to post a 9-4 win over the Washington baseball team in the first game of a Pac-10 series Friday at Evans Diamond.
Gold (5-3) left the game with two outs in the eighth. He allowed three runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out four in his seven and two-thirds innings. Bears closer Jesse Ingram came on and got the last four outs of the game for his fifth save.
The win improved California's record at 17-17 overall and 4-3 in the Pac-10 while Washington dropped to 15-8-1 and 2-2 in the conference. Husky senior reliever Trent Baysinger (2-2) suffered the loss, allowing three runs over two and one-third innings.
Washington got off to a quick start, scoring in each of the first two innings. In the first, Brent Lillibridge lead off with a walk and scored from first on a double from second baseman Greg Isaacson. In the second, Kyle Larsen singled and eventually came around on a wild pitch and the UW went in front 3-0 when Taylor Johnson scored on a Lillibridge single.
Cal chipped away at the lead with single runs in the second and third innings. In the second, catcher Chris Grossman was hit by a pitch and eventually scored on a Jordan Karnofsky single. In the third, the Bears loaded the bases with no outs and Grossman grounded into a double play to send home a run.
The Golden Bears finally tied the score in the fifth when David Nicholson doubled, moved to third on a groundout and then scored on a fielder's choice from Grossman.
Washington had a chance to move back in front in the seventh. Isaacson led off with his second double of the day and moved to third when the throw in was bobbled by the Cal second baseman. However, Zach Clem was retired on a foul popup before Matt Lane flied to right. Isaacson tried to score on Lane's fly ball, but was thrown out at the plate by Bears right fielder Brian Horwitz.
Horwitz then came through in the bottom of the seventh, giving the Bears a 4-3 lead by delivering a two-out single up the middle that plated Nicholson with the go-ahead run.
The Bears put the game away with four runs in the eighth. Brett Munster doubled and scored on a double from Allen Craig to start it. After a single put two runners aboard, David Weiner belted his fifth home run of the season. Grossman followed with a double and eventually scored on a Horwitz sacrifice fly. Washington got a run in the ninth on Zach Clem's eighth home run of the season.
Nicholson finished the game 3-for-4 to lead the Bears. Washington first baseman Kyle Larsen was 3-for-4 with three singles while Isaacson went 2-for-3 with two doubles.
UW starter Tim Lincecum didn't figure in the decision. The freshman righty allowed three runs on four hits and four walks while striking out six in his five innings of work.
The Huskies and Bears continue the three-game series Saturday in a 1:00 p.m. game.
